[March] What are you playing?

My old school crusade continues. I finished Dragon Quest IV (NES), and have started Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (GCN version). It's tolerable, I suppose, but I can see why it was named the "red-headed stepchild" of the Zelda series (the Phillips CD-i versions notwithstanding). We'll see if I bother to finish it. In any case, it's my second-last game in my 'NES-era' list, with only Phantasy Star I (GBA remake) to go before moving on to the SNES era.
Heh, quoting myself.

I did happen to finish Zelda II, and it was passable. I'm now most of the way through Phantasy Star I, and it's pretty stinky... just further proof to me that Sega just doesn't "get it", and will likely never get it (and nowadays has - thankfully - been punished for it). At the time Phantasy Star I came out, the NES already had DQ 1-3 and FF 1-2... there's pretty much no excuse for the crap that Phantasy Star I is. Here's yet another hefty "You suck, Sega!" call from me. (However, I heard that PS 2-4 are much better, so I'm keeping the hope alive!)

PS1 was a ton of fun for its time. I'll admit that it doesn't hold up particularly well and it a punishing and downright un-fun game at points. But it is a serious challenge. Getting through the final dungeon was one of the best feelings ever. Felt like I really accomplished something.

PS2 was excellent, but just as punishing in parts (better story and for its time the best ending I had ever seen). This was my personal fave in the series.

PS3 was a letdown and the only one I haven't replayed since it came out. But still very fun in parts. The whole "you make your kids and they become the next adventuring party" angle was very cool and I would love to see it done better in a future game.

PS4 was probably the best of the bunch, not to mention the easiest.

As for the series as a whole, I played up to 3 before even laying hands on a Final Fantasy game. The FF games are *so* much easier by comparison that I couldn't believe it. Don't have to conserve MP all the time? Wow. :)

World of Warcraft (kinda sorta--couple hours per week) and Diablo 2 of all things.

Got my Werewolf Druid up to level 24 last night. Can't wait for 30 so I can get Fury and my Grizzly Bear.

Icewind Dale II

Tell me about Magic Online. Is that based off of the card game?

Yeah, it's a fully supported thing from Wizards. It gets new set releases along with the paper version. They've integrated support for it into the official Magic WotC site, if you want to learn more.

Is it free?
Nope, not at all. The software itself is free to download, and they have a "free trial" area where you can play with one of five free theme decks, but besides that you're paying for boosters, starters, singles, and tournaments exactly as you would in real life.
