Martial artist without monk "spirituality"?

How would you go about building a martial artist (hand to hand combatant) without using the Monk class?

I'd use Beyond Monks: The Art of the Fight, available in PDF and in print from Goodman Games. It has a nice martial artist class and a great selection of feats for all unarmed combatants.

You know, I should really dust my copy off and look through it -- I haven't read it in ages, but I remember that it was pretty good.

I think in this case monk 5/fighter x is the way to go. You gain the hand to hand, some good saves to start, but you keep ramping up the BAB, feats, and hp. I probably would allow some feats that increased your unarmed damage to keep you competitive.

At CL 9 I'd probably let you take a feat to increase your damage (just on unarmed attacks) by 2.

That might work...although I did forget that with those fighter levels he can already get a +2 to damage with weapon spec unarmed.
