Tweaked the design goals to add a list of things the Harrier should be able to deny the enemy, such as: actions, movement, abilities, areas of the battlefield.
Little did I know what was going to happen today (i.e. the premature release of 4e and lots of leaked content)...
Some of the information leaked has certainly sparked my imagination and design juices... and as I sit here in front of version 0.03 I realize I'm making a lot more changes than I intended to yesterday... I might just skip right to version 0.04 because of my newfound knowledge, which means it might be another day or two before I get another version up for everyone to enjoy.
I just posted version 0.04 Harrier for everyone's enjoyment. There are a lot of new mechanics included to make the Harrier a controller in light of what we've learned the past few days about the Core Rules and the differences between the Striker and Controller roles.
Some Highlights:
1) The Harrier now gets some minor at-will abilities to help them control the battlefield. These are called control zones and affect an area around a ranged attack.
2) I also added an extra immediate action to the Harrier's class abilities, which help him to react to changes on the battle field outside his turn.
3) I dropped some of the weapon talents in favor of cover and movement-based class features, which could help the Harrier feel like a true skirmisher.
I'm on vacation for a few days, but I expect to have a new version of the Harrier up and ready to play next week once I've had time to digest the PHB and any class-related material in the DMG.
Thanks to all those who have been providing feedback on the previous versions of the Harrier... and I hope others will help out as well once the rules hit the shelves
Good News: After seeing how all the other classes work I believe the concept of a martial controller is doable and the Harrier is a go!
Bad News: I was one of the winners of the "pre-ordered-to-back-ordered" sweepstakes and so I only have access to my friend's PHB and not the DMG/MM... I'm hoping these are not chalk full of good design tips for classes and powers b/c if they are I'll probably have to do a lot of revision on the Harrier once I get them in my hands (hopefully the end of this week/early next week).
More Good News: I've almost got the heroic tier of the Harrier class finished... once its done I'll redo the preview character and include progression through levels 1-10.
So keep your eyes peeled for another update by the weekend... this time with a fully operational heroic tier Harrier.
Hong: Could be worse...could have a jetpack and a laser rifle....
Jaldaen: I like the concept, and the powers seem to work. There's a few quibbles with the damage for some of the attacks, but that can wait for the consolation prize from your "backorder sweepstakes" .
