you think man-thing is a bad name?

what about when he was in an over-sized issue?

it was called

GIANT SIZE MAN-THING

Its not that its a bad name :) Just the thought of a man creature running through the swamp attacking people, I thought, fit in with the bad movies SciFi runs sometimes on Saturdays. :)

Not a good sign. Take the poor man's Swamp Thing (already a second tier character for DC Comics) and make a bad movie out of it that nobody will even see. :\

Guess you never read him during the Moore years, eh?

Oh, I've read all the Moore issues, and love them. But prior to that, Swamp Thing was pretty much a second-string character, and Man-Thing was an imitation of him. That's what I was talking about. I like Swamp Thing, but he certainly has nowhere near the exposure that 1st string characters have, and Man-Thing is even lower on the comic character ladder.

Not being a comic book afficinado, I just assumed Man-Thing was Swamp-Thing, and the naming rights to "Swamp-Thing" were still owned by the cheesy 80's Movies people.

Bleh.. copy of a copy. Now Mansquito-Thing, that I might watch.

Hey, he did have the cool "fear touch" thing! And the whole "Nexus of Realities" deal that got added on later...

But yeah. Swamp Thing knockoff.

Actually, not true. Swamp Thing debuted in '72, Man-Thing in '71. Swamp Thing was influenced by writer Len Wein's story the previous year in DC's House Of Secrets (they probably worked that character in later Swamp Thing stories when they revealed there were previous Swamp Things). However, that story came out at roughly the same time as Man-Thing's 1st appearance.

Both were probably influenced by The Heap, and possibly Solomon Grundy, two "dead guys revived as swamp creatures" from the '40s.

What's really weird is The Heap was revived by Skywald Publishing in...1971.

Considering that proto-Swamp Thing and Man-Thing debuted within such a short time of each other, it's most likely a coincidence. However, considering that the Swamp Thing name wasn't created until a year after Man-Thing, it's possible that DC ripped Marvel off in that regard.

I may be crazy, but I seem to remember a short lived Swamp Thing cartoon from when I was younger...

You may still be crazy but yes there was a really bad Swamp-thing cartoon at one point (usally had Swampy battling Anton Arcane and his Un-Men), The Swampthing Movie came out in early 80s (82?) to be followed in 89 by the Return of Swampthing

Both Swampy and Man-Thing were probably based on The Heap and the earlier It (by Theodore Sturgeon)

Swampy was always better than Man-thing though
