My own advice for years now has been at http://home.earthlink.net/~duanevp/dnd/masscmbt.htm Summed up it comes down to: if the PC's are involved, handle it strictly from their perspective - roleplay it.

I like the Mass Combat rules of the GT system, where units clash with each other based on their respective ELs.
