Mass Combat Rules ... which ones?

All rightee ... I've seen about a half-dozen variants on how to run mass combat in a D&D campaign, and it looks like 3.5 hasn't endorsed any particular one.

So, what's YOUR recommendation?

Unit Combat: OMCS or Mercenaries
Army Combat: Cry Havoc

Cry Havoc's unit combat is well written and all, but has more detail than I am likely to want to go into.

Anything considered now has a new competitor in a week or two with the miniature handbook. I'll wait till that comes out to endorse it, but just want to make sure people know that it is not just for Minis.

Personally I think it has the worst title ever considering what all rules are in there!

The LOTR RPG (by Decipher) and Savage Worlds (by Pinnacle) both have good abstract Mass Battle rules. If you want skirmishes with tacticals, I recommend Savage Worlds (which also has skirmish level rules).

...in fact, just dump d20 and go with Savage Worlds for your whole game: RPG, Skirmish & Mass Battle. ;) That's what I did and I'm a heckuva lot happier for it. :D
