I'm a fan of handling war by DM fiat. This doesn't mean that the PCs have no effect, but rather that the player characters would make 'the difference'.

A group of PCs typically would not be part of a standing army. They would be more like special forces. SO they have a certain job.

For instance, perhaps there is a certain bridge that MUST be held. If the group fails, the King's army won't be resupplied and the nearby town will fall. If they succeed, then the town is saved. Or they can sneak into enemy camp to steal battle plans. Or they can destroy supplies. Or you can throw horde after horde of troops at them, and once X number have fallen, the morale of the enemy breaks.

I don't really see any benefit in turning D&D into Warhammer Fantasy. If you do, you likely have good rules for such combats laying around.
 

I wrote a computer program capable of enacting 2E mass combats between two or more units on a man-by-man level using just the standard combat rules, with round-by-round casualty reports. Could spit back the aftermath of a round in less than a second. Mass number crunching is nothing to a computer. :) You could add/subtract people from the combat, set the general tactical disposition of the units, and soforth. Lots of goodies. I'm surprised nobody has made such a thing for 3E yet. Who needs mass combat rules, when you can resolve combat on a man-to-man level in mass quantities by computer?

It was eaten in the great disk crash of '97. Now that I am the proud owner of a 3 TB RAID, this shouldn't be happening much anymore. Damn newfangled cheapass HDs. They just don't make 'em like they used to, I tell you. I have an ancient 20 MB drive....and it still works. These new things, though, they crap out on you in a year or two.

Hey, I'd buy it if it were out, already. So any idea on what date the book'll hit the streets? It was supposed to be out this month, already, but so much for that. The waiting's starting to get on my nerves.

I second that. I am DMing an egyptian-themed campaign in the heavily modified Old Empires in Faerun, and I have pre-ordered a copy of Testament to mine it for material.
 

I've been using a modified version of the mass combat rules from the Lord of the Rings RPG (Decipher) for my face-to-face campaign. It required some tweaking of bonuses and the like (LotR is 2d6 based, not d20), but the system seemed to work fairly well and my players enjoyed it (I let them use and run the good guys while I ran the bad guy units... it helped keep them from becoming inactive during the long battles).

It's much more abstract than personal combat (and even moreso than the LotR system) because I didn't want it to take up a lot of time and I'm expecting a lot of large battles in the campaigns future... that is, if the party survives its trek into the desert.

I haven't used the system in 3e yet, so all the changes I made to it haven't been combat tested (though they're almost all above). Anything you can think of to rework it?

As this is essentially a hi-jack thing, I'm starting a new thread in the House Rules section, let me know there! :)
