Masterwork Stone Weapons?

Angel Tarragon

Dawn Dragon
I just created a new dwarven fighter for an online game and have given her four ranks in craft (weaponsmithing). And now I'm wondering, is it possible to create masterwork stone weapons? I ask because if it were then my character would then be eligible to benefit from the +2 bonus to crafting stone items. Does anyone have any homebrew rules on this or know of an official answer?

I have no problem with this.

I don't know if there are official rules for stone weapons but I imagine they probably do less damage; it might be -1 to damage rolls. Maybe they should break on criticals or something., as well.

Just a thought.

Here's what I do. I use stone weapons for monsters such as trolls and trogs.

Stone versions can be made for all "mass" weapons (including maces, hammers, warhammers, and axes)

Cost: 1/2 normal cost
Damage: Same as normal weapon
Critical: becomes 20/x2 if not already
Weight: Same as normal weapon
Type: becomes Bludgeoning if not already.
Hardness: 5
Hit Points (small, medium-sized, large): 2,5,10

The net result is that some weapons, like maces, work just as well if made from stone. All other weapons get a drop in their critical range which makes them more or less equivalent to maces.

Oh. I just realized that I need to update these rules for 3.5. Its on my to-do list.

Actually, I'm thinking more along the lines of swords. She is a dextrous fighter that wields two short swords.

There was a monster in the 1e Fiend Folio (QUillans?) that wielded stone bastard swords that were +1 to hit. They were +1 for like 10 rounds or something then they "lost their edge" or something like that. Maybe you could do something like that...+1 to hit for the 1st 10 rounds a day (assuming she resharpens them each night).

Just a thought.

Here is what I'm hoping to eventually do: create a couple of masterwork stone short swords and have them put aside and eventually magically enhanced. I guess I should have stated this earlier.

The weren't stone, just razor sharp. They were +3 but had a 20% per round chance of reverting to a normal broadsword. Oh, its was spelled Qullan which can't be right.

If you checked my link, I also have rules for flint weapons. Here's the excerpt ...

Flint slashing and bladed weapons

Cost: 3/4 normal cost
Damage: Die one size smaller
Critical: Same
Range Increment: Same
Weight: Same
Type: Same
Hardness: 8
Hit Points (light, one-handed, two-handed): 1,2,5
Special: A flint edge is easily chipped. A natural roll of 1 indicates that the weapon has lost its edge. The weapon now has a 20/x2 critical multiplier.

All, in all, I'd say that dual shortsword wielding is very un-dwarflike.

Exactly. It will be achallenge to roleplay the character and come up with a history on how she came to be a dual short sword wielding person.

I think that dual-wielding flint blades is awesomely cool. Something I'd expect an agile dwarf barbarian, druid, or ranger to think of. I believe that there are spells that let you permanently increase items hardness; until you can get them ensorcelled (I love this word) I'd suggest carrying a few backups.

Aaron? I remember your post a long while ago with all the weapon templates. I liked it then, and still do. Thanks for the link.
