Maybe I'm playing it wrong...

No-one said they should be able to take out (non-Minion) enemies in one hit. They said that, by operating as a team and focusing fire, they should be able to take out enemies in one round. Usually, you want to gang up on one enemy at a time until it's dead, preferably the one that does the most damage or has the greatest ability to cause debilitating conditions. Then move on to the next one and do the same.

I was under the impression that they were using Essentials characters. Essentials characters use Basic Melee Attacks are their main attacks (the martial classes do anyway) and don't get the option of choosing Tide of Iron or Cleave and the like.

It depends on which Essentials Fighter is being played. The Knight gets access to stances like Cleaving Assault which works much like Cleave, or Hammer Hands, which allows you to push the enemy and then shift to stay with them.

But I'm pretty sure the character in question is the Slayer version of the Essentials Fighter, whose Stances mostly add bonus damage in different ways.

Yeah. In that case damage should be around 1d12+9 (15,5 average) = the same as Brash Strike. Or even as high as 1d12+12. (+4 str, +3 dex, +4 stance, +1 weapon focus).
