McFarlanes’S Dragons are out.

I got the Komodo and Water Dragons today. Very nice! I even found a Heroscape expansion as an added bonus! It was the Romans for those of you who play Heroscape.

I saw that WalMart is carrying the Dragons as well, except the store had only the Komodo's, so apperently they are having some kind of stocking problem.

Are these things prepainted? The webpage says "original paint" which to me sounded like it's a unique paint job, and you have to paint it yourselves... or did it mean that the pictures are painted differently from the ones in the box?

On second thoughts, who cares? I want one too!

These are awesome. The quality of McFarlane figure is very good. I'm a big fan of their football figures.

To those that have purchased a dragon, how do they correspond to a 1" square grid?

The base on the Komodo is just longer than 4" and a bit over 2" wide (but appropriate for a 4" Gargantuan base). The dragon extends about 2-3" out from the base in all directions (neck, wings, tail).

I'll mount the base on a 4"x4" when I do my next batch of basing (Tremor 3, a toy Kraken, and Undead Raven Spawn are waiting for bases as well).

Typically the person that designs the toy's sculpt works on what is called a "2-Up" because it's (roughly) twice the size of the finished work. These are almost always done in a generic color, usually gray, and then painted by hand after the sculpt is finished. The manufacturer takes these 2-Ups and scales them down to the final size, producing prototypes to make sure everything works fine before a full run. Once the full run happens, the design is cast in plastic that matches the base color of the paint scheme and the details are painted on.

Because the 2-Up is hand painted by a person and the final product is assembly-line painted, there may be some differences in the final paint app and the ones shown on the website.

The "SORCERERS CLAN DRAGON" has that crystal ball in its hands and reminds me too much of all those pewter knick-knack dragons. I doubt I'd want to use that at my table.
To the designer's credit, it does look far more fearsome and... sorcerous than the pewter dragons with crystal balls I've seen.

Got to go find a Toys R' Us today. These look sweet.

Yeah, I suppose that's true.

Ya know, you could have reamed me a new one for holding an opinion of any kind, or simply used my post as a springboard to launch into a rant about those pewter dragons, but you just sorta calmly redirected my perspective on the matter. If you keep posting in such a concillatory and moderate tone, you're going to have to request a change of screenname. Somekindofwonderful might be going too far but, perhaps, Somekindofdiplomat is available?

This is a great idea. Where do you get your 4x4 bases (or do you make your own)?

For now they are made of marbled matte board (lightly attached with white glue). But I'm looking for something heavier but not too heavy (1/2" plywood would be too heavy).

Also vascilating between circular and square (w/rounded corners).

For large and smaller, GW plastic round in 25mm and 40mm are standard.

I bought all of them online for pretty good deal, got them on friday of last week.

I would say the two that bug me the most are the Eternal and Sorcerers clan dragons.

I think the Fire, Komodo and Water clan are very good and will be great in any RPG game.

The Eternal I have a big issue with the Feet... the claws are not part of the toy but part of the base, and are painted the same as the wood shingles, the toes of one of the feet are cut off and part of the base as well and don't line up correctly. This was a real bummer.

The Sorcerer dragon is decent but the Orb in his hand looks NOTHING like the mock up pictures, lucky for me I had a marble and I removed the crappy rubber ball and replaced it with something that looked better.

The Berserker dragon is awesome but not very functional for a RPG game, since it is very large and isnt really posistioned in a manor that works very well for table top play. The knight can be removed but then the fire coming out looks a little lame with out it hitting the shield.

Overall this dragon is my favorite but will be one I just plop on my monitor for display purposes.

The paint and sculpts are superior to the D&D miniatures, but they should be at this point.

The translucent wings were a nice touch.
