Pathfinder 1E Me Oh, My Oh! A Pathfinder Forum!

Maybe I'm an outlier here, but the whole reason Pathfinder is a more intriguing option to me than 4e is because it'll still be compatible with 3.5. As compatability wanes because of things like this, so does my interest. If it changes to the point where I can't use existing 3.5 material without a number of "fixes" of my own to make it work, then I might as well just play 4e after all. Or just stick with 3.5, and ignore Pathfinder.

You're not alone Hobo. When I brought this up at Paizo's boards the response I got was very much along the lines of: you can still use your 3.5 hardcovers to play the Pathfinder Adventure Path and modules, because the stats within will be so familiar and easy to read at a glance with 3.5 rules that having the Pathfinder RPG won't be necessary for play. 'Conversion', if you will, will be a simple eyeballed procedure, as easy or moreso than the differences between 3.0 and 3.5.

At the moment, that's good enough for me!

Let's breathe a little more life into this old OGL forum, shall we?

I have heard some posters call it a neglected corner of EN World, a ghetto, if you will.

So, my friends, Let's Clean Up the Ghetto!

It's been a little more than a week since Paizo announced the Open Playtest of the new Pathfinder RPG 3.5 legacy system, and already more than 10,000 gamers have downloaded the Alpha release 1. Our message boards have exploded with playtest comments and rules development discussions unlike anything I have ever seen.

It is an enormously exciting time for Paizo as a company, and I think it is an enormously exciting time for the RPG industry in general. Our decision to stick with 3.5 is a commitment to the principles of the 3.5 OGL, the bedrock of a movement that transformed the industry in 2000 and that introduced names like Mike Mearls, Monte Cook, and Joe Goodman to tens of thousands of gamers.

EN World has been, bar none, THE most important online community to the development of the OGL rules. The ENnies, formed to recognize excellence in the d20 publishing field, grew out of this community to become the most prestigious professional award in gaming, eclipsing the far more established Origins Awards as a sign of quality (and popularity).

EN World is important to the ongoing life of the Open Gaming movement, and for that reason I plan to keep a close eye on this new Pathfinder/OGL forum, and I'll be happy to comment and answer questions about Pathfinder and Paizo's plans for the future.

It makes sense that the moderators have moved Pathfinder discussion to the OGL forum. The project would be impossible without the OGL. As 100% of the rules in all Pathfinder products are released as open content for other publishers and fans to use as they please, I have a feeling we will find a very comfortable home here.

I hope you'll join in the Pathfinder RPG Alpha playtest, and I hope to see you around this forum in the future!

Yeah, I suppose. I mean, that's good enough for me to keep buying other Paizo products, but such that I might pass on the Pathfinder RPG itself, if that design philosophy is more prevalent than just the example I pointed out. Oh, well.

If you're skeptical of the rules book itself, I suggest checking out the free Beta PDF, robbing what you like from it, and not worrying too much about the RPG going forward. The adventures and stuff will be very familiar and easy to use even if you are sticking with straight 3.5.

I plan on supporting the Pathfinder RPG, but I've already started combining elements from the Pathefinder RPG and Book of Experimental Might and a few other sources for my own game. I think that even with this hodgepodge I still believe that my games will still be more compatable with my 3.5 material than 4E will.

Cool stuff, Erik. Between Planet Stories and this, Paizo has grown a lot in my eyes, and if this place is a ghetto, it should be a friendly and comfortable one. :D

If it is all right with you, would you talk about PF's strategy regarding your 3rd party publishers? Do you see Pathfinder attracting the currently active d20/OGL publishers under its umbrella? I know a few have already expressed their intention to participate, and (a bit selfishly) I hope others will follow.

We've heard from a number of publishers who would like to support 3.5/PRGP with releases, but to be completely honest we are so focused on getting the game out right now that we haven't had time to put a lot of serious thought into the right way of going about this. The rules are still in Beta for lots more months, so there's a bit of time yet remaining.

Thanks for your interest in Planet Stories! I am having a blast with that line.
