Mechanical penalties for losing an arm?

I may be a little biased as this is my character who will be suffering the penalties, but a dex penalty seems very harsh. So I lose an arm, and suddenly I'm 10% easier to hit? In some ways, there's less of me to hit in that perspective.

Less choice of where to hit you, so easier to hit ;) (Joking)

I think a temporary loss to Dex and Str would be good, for role-playing sake as you adjust to the new balance of your body.

I like the -10 to Climb, makes a lot of sense. Swim would have a lesser penalty, or maybe none at all since leg power is important. Tumble would also have a minor penalty, say -2 or -4.

I never thought of the magic item consequences that Victim mentioned, specifically that bracers and gloves work in pairs (with the noted exception of the Glove of Storing). So much for your monk's Bracers of Armor :uhoh:

I think Grappling should have a major penalty, around -5 to -8, although that is arguable since legs can lock just as effectively (Goldeneye, anyone? The thigh-killer).

Cheers

If it is just the hand, not the whole arm, you could use rules from City of Splendors: Waterdeep.

Feat Hand of Tyr disallows use of other hand and gives following penalties:
Hand of Tyr said:
Since you are using only one hand, you cannot fight with two weapons, wield a two-handed weapon, or fight with a one-handed weapon and a heavy shield. You cam fight with a one-handed weapon and a light shield, but you cannot use your shield hand to hold other objects such as a holy symbol; spell components, or a light source. (This means you must use your weapon hand to cast spells, so you might have to drop or sheathe a weapon when you wish to cast a spell requiring your holy symbol or somatic components.) You take a -4 penalty on Climb, Disable Device, Open Lock, and Tumble checks. You can only gain the benefit of wearing one magic ring.

Maybe that can still work as starting point.

Critical Feats from Reality Deviant Publications had a number of rules related to things like this, including broken arms and the like. Might be worth a look.
