medieval arrowslit schematics

Any medieval architecture fans & experts out there who care to tackle an eclectic and unimportant topic? :o

What are the dimensions of a typical arrowslit niche and how does this vary with culture, geography, technology advances, and tactics? It's easy to make up an answer for D&D purposes, I'm curious about "history" and reality, and how it varies from castle to castle around the world. A quick scan of books & Internet sites was largely unhelpful (plus it takes hours of detective work and internet surfing, which is not as fun as lurking around a message board)

What are the subtle differences in trends between the dimensions of typical French, English, German, Japanese, etc, etc, etc, castle arrowslits niches? (due to different regional weapon-type trends, architectural limitations, etc). How wide is typical "narrow" end in a real-world castle? (I'd guess most are around several inches), and how much does it vary? It's been a while since I've visited all those castles in France, but I seem to remember that the "narrow" ends of slits were much wider than I anticipated. What about the slot height? (which I would guess is about 6'), and the variance in width of the "archer" end of the niche?, or the "depth" span (I'd guess this varies with the wall thickness, what are the historical differences in regional castle wall thicknesses?)

The thing I'm most curious about are the geographical/cultural/timeline differences, what are typical dimensions and how much do they vary?
