Meditating elves and rolling to wake up

Shalewind, you can only prepare spells once per day. It doesn't matter if you're an elf (4 hour meditate) or a thri-kreen cleric (no sleep). You can still only do that once per day. For wizards and sorcerers, you're supposed to do that in the morning, and cannot prepare until the next morning. Clerics must pick a specific time of day (eg noon) and always prepare spells that time of day.

To anwer your question: no.

Funny thing. I looked through the text about spellcasting and the spellcasting classes and could not find any rules that says that you can only memorize spells once a day.

Now there are many things with suggestive labels like "Spells per day", "Daily Readying of Spells", and "daily spells". But there is nothing that specifically says that you can't memorize spells more then once a day.

As an aside, it does say that if you rest for 15 minutes you can fill any un-used spell slots that you have with spells. And that when you memorize spells, any spells you have used in the last 8 hours count against the new preparation limits, they are considered already used.

So technically it could be possible to cast spells then refresh yourself with 8 hours or sleep/rest and then memorize your spells again. Could be very useful in some situations.

Now I don't think that is what was intended. But this is the rules forum, not the as intended forum. As I have been told.

Just one more idea to throw out there:

Ken Hood's alternate skill-based psionics system (very good, btw) gives rules for a Meditation feat, which allows you to meditate like an elf. The penalties listed are -4 to listen and spot, I believe. Might be a little too leniant, but just another way to handle it.

Umm, this alternate system sounds interesting. Can someone please post/point me towards where I can find them?

Thanks,

Ken's Stuff is AWESOME. He is perhaps the best alternate system rules for combat in d20 I have seen. Personally I'm using his Grim'N'Gritty Combat rules in a campaign now. Deadly, but very cool. Here is his d20 stuff:

He had some fudge stuff on his main page too, if you go for that kind of thing. :o His world deserves some praise as well IMHO.

Well, anyone on wheter or not spells can be used more than once at day (rather studied for)? Does this deserve a new thread?

Ah, but your not a battle-hardened adventurer, are you?

True, and I wasn't a cool-skinned meditating elf either. But, on the reality side (not that I'm trying to inject reality into a game), the rule makes sense. Turning undead isn't a quiet process, nor is battle with metal weapons. Lots of clanging, lots of yelling, lots of calling down the wrath of the gods onto the rotting heads of the undead. A battle hardened adventurer would be awake at the first call to arms...or at the latest, the first clang of steel, adrenaline pumping and hands going for his weapons. Even if he never fired a shot, he'd still be left with all that "unspent vigor" to deal with...Anyway, an opinion in support of the rule.

The spells per day heading of the relevant table is really the only thing there is in the rules.

Altho it is reasonable to understand it like exactly that, the number of spells you can memorize and cast during one day, not per resting period (i.e. every 8.25 hours).
