MEG's D20 Future setting

I have fond memories of Bravestar in my head when I think of space westerns...

Star Trek is Wagon Train in space... DS9 was almost like Tombstone in the beginning and then became acid fried spiritual biblical stuff for the latter (superior) half of the series... still my favorite Trek.

That was the original idea, though whether or not that's changed I dunno. You'll have to ask Hal or Doug.

Well, even if it takes a little longer I'll be happy to see it. Heck, I'm planning on taking time out of reviewing pdfs to review this one. That's how much I'm looking forward to it!! :D

Bravestar
Bravestar

In a distant time and far away place
The Planet New Texas floats deep in space
Sky of three suns, land of precious ore
The karium rush brought outlaws by the score

Bravestar
Bravestar

Then one day, a lawman appeared
With powers of hawk, wolf, puma and bear

Bravestar
Bravestar

Protector of peace, mystic man from afar
Champion of justice, Marshal Bravestar

Bravestar
Bravestar

Eyes of the hawk, ears of the wolf

Bravestar
Bravestar

Strength of the bear, speed of the puma

Bravestar

Bravestar!

Well, not quite the feel I'm going for to be honest. It's more of a mesh between Firefly and Cowboy Bebop, with a hefty dose of good, old fashioned Westernd thrown in. To give you an idea of what I mean, two movies I researched when beginning the design phase were The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and High Noon.

Interestingly enough, I've been watching DS9 seasons on DVD. Don't expect much Star Trek in the setting, but I do see the similarities you mention.

I hope it lives up to your expectations. I'm working very hard on it right now and really want to make it a pleasing purchase. Just knowing that someone around here will review it gives me hope that some people might actually play it. This thing is a real labor of love.

The closest Clint Eastwood to a sci-fi film is Space Cowboy, and it's not about space western.

The representation of space western is Star Wars Tattooine (with the infamous Mos Eisley Cantina) and of course the short-lived Firefly TV series (you can find the DVD set in local video stores), now heading to the silver screen retitled Serenity (the name of the "star" ship).
Don't forget Outland.

Green Ronin is doing Red Star, a sci-fi setting based on a comic book. However, it does refer to "Military Industrial Sorcery" which is something of a turn-off to me.
I really dig and am eagerly awaiting The Red Star, but it (the setting that is, I can't speak to the RPG) would be more accurately filed under Alternate History/Science-Fantasy rather than Hard SF. If you're interested in a strictly non-FX SF setting, The Red Star is not what you're looking for. It's about as hard as Star Wars.

This sounds good. I like westerns, and space fiction. Though I have to say that I was let down with the last space western game I bought, deadlands: lost colony. It just wasnt as good as the previous deadlands games.

With bebop as resource material, it is a sure must have for me.

I might want to do a space western thingie one of these days. That's outside of my usual Sci_Fi fare and might just be what the doctor ordered.

A little craziness a la Gunslinger thrown in, for the audience. Hey Jude gives me goosebumps now, and I think a "space saloon" with that off-key in the background might just be the ticket.

I'm currently cobbling together a few space-based adventures out of D20Modern and 'Blood and Space' and Star*Drive ... since nobody asked me to playtest D20Future and that's all my player base is interested in right now.

When you say space western I can't help but think of the cartoon Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, which aired in 86 for a short while. Now that was a kick butt cartoon, and it really was a space western.
