If all you care about is doing damage to monsters, play a fighter.

If you care about being the central character in the group, play a spell caster.

If you want to do both, be a cleric. That way, in 3e, you can have your cake and eat it too.

I don't particularly care how well the characters balance against one another. I just happen to like the 1e balance of power. I want wizards to be powerful at high level...that's what I like.

Then play 1st Edition. Third is balanced. Does anyone know if HackMaster preserved the old state of affairs?
