Mercurial Strike feat...

Here's the description...

"Benefit: Any time an opponent provokes an attack of opportunity from you, but you are unarmed, you may draw a melee weapon and make your attack of opportunity with it. The target of your attack of opportunity is caught flat footed for that attack."

Now, for the very simple question; How are you supposed to be able to use this when you're unarmed? The problem should be pretty obvious.

You know what? Nevermind. I didn't think it through very well. No mercurial strikes against baddies moving in circles around you, but its a go for everything else.

They can provoke AoO even if you don't threaten them, you just normally can't follow up on those AoO.

....No, I'm pretty sure it says that if you don't threaten, they don't provoke.

Hey kreynolds, how about this...

Mercurial Strike [General]
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1,Combat Reflexes, Quick Draw.
Benefit: Whenever an opponent would normally provoke an attack of opportunity from you, but you do not threaten an area, you may automatically draw a melee weapon as a free action and take your attack of opportunity. If you have Two-Weapon Fighting, you may draw two one-handed or light weapons as a free action, but you may still only make a single attack of opportunity.
Normal: A character that does not threaten an area cannot make attacks of opportunity.

So, if they come within your reach and do something to provoke an attack of opportunity, you can bust out your weapon and smack them upside the head.

Quick Draw is an obvious prereq. Combat Reflexes states that it allows you to respond quickly... so I figured it would make a good prereq... and it allows to you make AoO's when flat-footed... just noticed that.

This basically what you were thinking?
