[Merged] Old Dice Thread 1 & 2

In the "How Does Your Family View Your Hobby" thread, someone mentioned an unfamiliarity with the old, "low-impact" TSR dice. In the interest of history, I've made a photo of my surviving few available on the web. Pictured are two pink twenty-siders, one in more or less "pristine" condition, the other heavily worn from years in a blue jean pocket at school, a white twenty-sider in worn condition, a green d8, somewhat worn, and an orange d6 (possibly the worst d6 ever made). All were purchased circa 1978 and are made of horrible soft plastic, with very hard-to-read numbers.

I still have my orginal set from 82, I think I retired them around 90 when I bought my second pair of dice. They are now in the Jar of Fame, a large jar I hope to one day fill up with dice that have been used for a whole campaign.

I think I have one left, the d20. It's almost round.

I have (or used too, they aren't in my dice bag at the moment but are most likely in amoung some of my Warhammer mini games) the same d6's that Theron has. Chipped and rounded almost into balls!

I also have a d12 is similar shape.


Conversely I have a Gamescience d20, d8, d10 and d4 that are in perfect shape - almost as good as the day they were bought.

I still have my double d10 (aka d20) in white, in about as good of condition as the one in the picture. All my remaining ancient dice besides that one are from the 80's however (the lighter, more opaque plastic dice from the basic set).

I have those dice that came with the red box circa 1986... you had to fill in the numbers with a white crayon !!

The edges are all crumbling and the d20 looks more like a ball now... goes right off the edge of any table ! I keep them for historical intrest only.

Same here! Some of the old dice are just unuseable but no way would I throw them out

That's what my dice look like.

One of my friends has an old d20 that he hauls out occasionally, just for fun. It's one of the old light blue plastic ones that needs white crayon rubbed on it to see the numbers well. The problem is, it's so worn down with use, a lot of the edges have flaked off. It rolls and rolls and rolls and rolls and then goes off the table. It seems to roll around in screwy directions for a long, long time before finally hitting a book or a table edge. We don't even let him use it much because of the time it takes to roll.
