D&D 4E Merric's thoughts on 4e

You lost me at the part where 4th Ed. being different from what's come before it somehow invalidates any merit it has as it's own game. It's apparent you're not a game agnostic to begin with.

It's just the same thing that was trumpeted when the changes in 3e were announced, and the lack of Thac0, negative AC, and percentile skills had some people proclaiming that it was no longer D&D.

If the internet was around in 1989, I'm sure we'd have heard the same thing about 2e.

Considering how much 3e borrowed from other games, I wonder if people who complain about 4e also consider 3e to not be D&D. I know there are a number of people who feel that way.

I'm certainly one of them.

I stand by what I said: GURPS doesn't have hit points. Didn't even have them in 3rd Ed.

(Unless one plays GURPS Supers, of course, which came up with Ablative DR. Which just goes to show, you can't keep a good idea down.)

GURPS has Hit Points, but not hit points? Got it.

(Though you could build hit points with GURPS Powers; they may already be in there, actually.)

Pretty much. ;)

Ablative DR pretty much IS hit points AFAIK. Heck, that's one reason why some GURPS people don't like it ("it's too much like D&D!").
