met a gamer at the barber!

The guy who cut my hair today had a copy of Castle Zagyg laying on a nearby table. I asked if he was a D&D player and he said he was more into Castles & Crusades. He knew some things about D20 and 4E (wasn't really enthusiastic about it) but he'd never heard of EN World and I didn't bother to enlighten him as it was going to take a long time to explain and, well, I had places to be.

Ironically, the book I brought with me (in case I had to wait) was one of Pazio's Planet Stories books -- he knew of Paizo!

Anyone else accidentally meet a random gamer in a non-gaming situation?

Just last weekend my wife's friend's husband came over with her and their kids. We were BBQing. One thing lead to another I found out he still plays Rolemaster (Claw Law, Spell Law, Arms Law, etc.) and has been for well over a decade. I didn't know people still played that. I certainly did in my misspent youth. Cool.

back when Dragon was a real, physical magazine (ahem), I would be approached by people from my company who saw me reading it and get all kinds of stories about their gaming days. Rarely was it someone I would have pegged as "gamer" by appearance, personality, or what I knew of their interests/hobbies; usually quite the opposite.

Classic.

I don't tend to meet gamers often. I wish I did. I'd kill for a local game. I've met a few former gamers though. My girlfriend's aunt used to game. It was pretty obvious given her interest in fantasy books/movies, but last christmas she gifted some old 1e D&D books and miniatures to me. I'll hold onto them. It's a pitty that I sold off most of my other old books. I've just never considered myself a collector. Still this older stuff is neat.

What was really funny is that I was sitting next to an old woman who was getting a perm. You know how geeks instantly start talking their secret geek code (Barber was explaining to me how the SIEGE engine works in C&C or somesuch jargony blather) and she just kept giving us these looks... :D

In more than one course of study (mainly during an IT phase), for starters. But that was a while ago.

My girlfriend had a nearly identical experience though - a hairdresser turned out to be bit of a VtM fan, and a one time LARPer too, IIRC. Not that you'd know it to look at her apparently - not even a goth!

When we were expecting our second child back in 2000, we decided to have a midwife attend the birth.

She came over to our place for one of the consultations because we couldn't get to her office that day. After the meeting she spotted my brand-spanking new 3.0 PHB in my bookshelf and asked what I thought of the new system. It turned out that she had been playing in a campaign her husband had been running for the last few years.
