Metamagic Rods - Wiz vs Sor

Lots of interesting viewpoints on this thread. But I wonder if there's a need to "balance" the metamagic rods to make them equally useful for sorcerers and wizards. After all, consider the Ring of Wizardry. Why should it grant the 20th-level sorcerer 6 extra spells, but the 20th-level wizard only 4?

Pearl of Power is quite a bit better for wizards, too.

Ring of Wizardry is a pretty useless item, anyways. :)

Sometimes items work better for one class than another. *shrug*

Yes, of course. But not by this extent?

If wizards can use the rods for spontaneous metamagic, they would negate one of the (only) distinct class disadvantages (while sorcerers get a special rule to keep theirs).

That's just not right.

"All the rods described here are use-activated (but casting spells in a threatened area still draws an attack of opportunity)."

Is that explicit enough? I can't think of what else "use-activated" means other than you use it when casting the spell.

Well, then, you're just not thinking about it the right way.

Because I can't think of what one would do with the rod while they were preparing the spell with the metamagic contained on the rod if they were not using the rod.

And, it does not say that use of the rod in a threatened area draws an attack of opportunity, it is reminding the user that a spell that is enhanced by a metamagic rod will still draw an attack of opportunity if it would have anyway. This is why the statement is parenthetical; the act of enhancing the spell does not provoke the AoO.

Hey, you're all free to allow the wizard to use the rods while casting, even though I can show that by the RAW it should not be possible. But, after seeing what I showed, why would anyone STILL want to screw the sorcerer over by allowing ALL the other casters to apply the rods at will, without extending the casting time like the sorcerer? Remember, only the sorcerer has the statement that the casting time is extended, which is shown to be patently FALSE.

As far as I can see, the only folks out to screw the sorcerer with these rods are not the people who wrote up the rods.

[OFF TOPIC]: While I've got the meaning down from context very well, thank you, I've been meaning to ask: The acronym RAW stands for what, explicitly?
