Midnight-Is it worth it?

I don't worry much about whether any d20 class or genre is good in the "higher levels". For me d20 totally breaks down from anything I'm interested in playing after around level 12 and doesn't work. It's not really a concern in most of the campaigns I've played in any case. My longest running campaign currently has been running for three years from level 1 and we're just now reaching 8th level. I expect to run Midnight from around 3rd to 10th level over the next three years. I expect Channelers to be perfect in this range. If a DM found any Class lagging at whatever level the campaign was at, I would expect a good DM to compensate - there are talismans, etc., that a Channeler could have to ameliorate the amount of spell energy of the higher level spells.

I've looked at every published setting that's come out for 3.X ed. For my money, Midnight is the only non-homebrew setting that's captured my interest (and money).

Please don't interpret my comments as outright complaints. I'm trying to offer them as constructive criticism, along with *why* I believe it's a problem. However, regardless of the concerns I have with the Channeler, I think Midnight looks like an amazing game to run and play. I'm very impressed, and would recommend it to friends.

Your criticism is perfectly valid. I was just saying that any weakness in Channeler balance in Midnight (or any class in any d20 game) is not of particular concern for me because I don't care for d20 at high levels. This, in part, for what I perceive as a massively skewed class balance issue at the higher levels in standard D&D in favor of spell-casters. 15th level Fighters, Barbarians, and Rogues are basically "along for the magic carpet ride" of the party mage. In my experience. If a 20th level Channeler can't wipe out armies on their own, that's a refreshing change of pace to me, and a welcome relief to the previously obsolete non-spellcasters in the group...

I have to say i mostly agree with this and also, on channeler balance, remember it ahs lots of skill points and a medium BAB with higher hit points than a wizard woudl have and lower than a cleric.

The class overalls well to me and that is the reason I have two players with it, they are 2nd level now, one of the channelers is first ebcause she joined last session and is a newbie, so I made her lower for learning things. ;)

As i see it, the channeler is a very very balanced class, it makes a difference when around and has its unique place at any level I consider, it can do well like a bard can in many areas but spellcasting, which is free from classes in Midnight, is where he truly excels.

Anyway, giving him more spell energy is what fixes what most people considedr it lacks, give him a number of points equal to the level attained in the class at each level, thus 1 at1st, 2 at 2nd and so on, he will end u with one possible spell from each level, medium BAB, d6 for hp, 6 skill points and also, spell energy bonus from stat modifier and race that can alow for some low level spells.

A good one that I am waiting to see a high level channeler before applying, but ready to throw out of the pocket and to the table.

Cheers,

Nif.

Nif,

I still think that UA's incantations might be a way of boosting the channeler's spellcasting without giving him extra spell energy or otherwise tinkering with the class.

Plus, wouldn't it be cool to find a ruined temple from the first age, piece together the shards that were once a feature wall, and discover that the mysterious writing contains the "recipe" for a powerful incantation? ;)

Anyway, if this piques your interest, let's start a thread about it over at AtS.

Cheers
D

And, Nif, if you have to choose between the two make sure you make the right choice.... ;)
