Military Gamers

Although I am no longer in the military, I spent 9 years, 4 months, 21 days in the United States Navy as a Data Processing Technician (DP).

I was stationed on the USS RANGER, SIMA SAN DIEGO and the USS CARL VINSON.

I still miss the ocean and going out to sea. I sometimes regret getting out -- after all, I had a great time in the service. The only reason I left was to get back and see my family before they were all gone...

But... I was a gamer before I went in. I was a gamer the whole time I was in. I remain a gamer now that I am out. And I AM proud.

Don't want to hijack this thread, so please bonk me on the head if you want me to start a new one.

I was curious, if you were a large or small d20 publisher, or heck even WoTC for that matter, what forums for advertising would best reach military personnel? I have never served so I don't know if there is one universal publication that most everybody reads, or if there are a handful that it would be of interest to advertise in.

Then I guess after finding a place to advertise, it would be just a matter of struggling to get military bases to actually carry the product.

Any insight would be appreciated and interesting.

I can't really speak for the other services, but in the USAF, just about every base has it's own small paper (usually a weekly). You'd have to contac the Public Affairs office at each base, however, to place an ad. Most of the medium and larger sized bases also have a Base Exchange (BX for USAF) or a Post Exchange (PX for Army). It is run by the Army-Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). You might talk to their headquarters (DC area, I assume) to see about placing products. I'd love it if there was some RPGs available. I know the BX at Ramstein has carried in the past. As for the entire military populace, there is a suite of weekly papers (Air Force Times, Army Times, and Navy Times) that you could put ads in as well. I assume their head office is in DC as well, but don't quote me on that. Best of luck. I imagine stuff would sell very well in the locations where conditions are a bit austere (i.e., Kuwait, Sarajevo, etc). Best of luck!!

I just got out, April 1st was my first day of freedom. I was a 98g (korean linguist). I too longed for Monterey...so, thats where I live now. If you know anyone at DLI looking for a gmae, I run a military friendly game. I also still have gaming contacts in Korea if anyone might be looking for a group there.

Each of the services also have a paper, well it isn't run by the service, but it caters to news for them. The Army, AF, Navy and Marine times. I know these accept advertising, but it might be a bit pricey for anyone that isn't a large company...they do have classifieds that could be used though. I imagine if you did a search for the army times or any of the others that you could find out more.

As said above, alot of places *local papers* that handle news for the base, theater, etc. Another option is the Stars and Stripes. They too accept advertising, but once again it might not be cost effective. I think their web address is the starsandstripes.com o9r something like that, I imagine you could google them as well.

I thought it would be a good marketing decision on wizarsd or anyone else's part to send gamer care packs to deployed troops, perhaps copies of the core books (even if they were a more cost effective spiral bound versaion), dice and stuff to maybe get people hooked on gaming. Granted troops fighting on the line wouldn't be able to make use of it, but people in the rear might enjoy having something to do during down time. Tobacco companies used tactics like this during the first gulf war to get people addicted to their products; they sent free cigs and dip... I imagine you could get peopel hooked on gaming...

Another option might be to seek out the AFN radio stations and donate products fo them to give away. If a small publisher gave a few copies to be given to "the 10th caller" or something like that, you might be able to get word out to people aboput your product...of course the AFN stations aren't allowed to advertise, but if they are giving something away, they will say who donated it, etc. www.afnkorea.com is an address that comes to mind.

USOs might also be a good thing to contact. Also, AAfees (the PX) does carry some gaming stuff, but it is mostly wizards based stuff and depending where you are, it isnt always a steady stream of products. In Korea, the guy who placed orders was supposedly a gamer. When we got WotC stuff in, it sold out pretty fast. I imagine 3rd party stuff might sell well too. I don't know what it would take to get your stuff put on a list they could order from, but you might want to search for the Army Airforce exchange service and see if you can come up with an address.

Hope some of this has been helpful. As a gamer who spent most of my 8 years in service overseas, I would love to see gaming products become more easliy accessible.

Actually, someone I know who is in Bahgdad right now told me something funny when we were chatting on the phone a few days ago.
Apparently some Shady Character burned all his books to CD, and took the CD with him. He also took his laptop, which had a CD burner in it.

My brother said that the CD with the core books has been copied about 1000 times, and there are a lot of new gaming groups. (Apparently there's one game that goes on in the back of a Bradley) A lot of printed out versions are cropping up.
According to my brother, the biggest problem right now is dice. He also complained that for about a week, harrassment attacks made gaming a bummer...

"I was rolling damage on my fireball, and some a$$monkey blew a clip against the side of the Bradley, and when we came back from trying to teach him lesson, we'd forgotten what we were doing, and when we replayed the encounter, my wizard got killed. I hate it when people interrupt the game because of thier personal problems."

So, if you know of a gamer that's sitting in Iraq right now, dice seem to be the priority.
Plus (and this just hit me) a lot of us will be buying new books when 3.5 comes out. Instead of letting our old 3E books sit and rot, why don't we see if there is a way to ship them over to the guys in 3 ID or 1 ME?
I can get a route into 7th Corps for it (One of my brothers is in Mortuary Affairs and will be in Bahgdad for awhile), maybe one of you guys can get an In to 3rd Infantry, and maybe S.H.A.R.K. still has buddies with the First Marine Expiditionary.
I think it'd be kinda cool, and even though the cover fell off my old PHB, they guys in the zone could get some use out of it.
