Our group use minis for every encounter (including non-combat) but not during lengthy travel sequences. By and large, we prefer Reaper minis, but several people in the group have a handful of Ral Partha and D&D minis also. We have a few battlemats that have been acquired through boxed sets and then laminated. Much like Dr. Midnight we use dry erase or washable markers for sketching out specific areas and rooms.

I love miniatures... collecting, painting, conversions... I can never get enough.

Mostly we use the miniatures for combat, but I make sure they show me marching order and how their characters will be arranged when camping and stuff. Bought some cool little carriages and horses for the caravans.. great fun!

I collect almost all kinds of miniatures... I play warhammer as well, so I am partial to Games Workshop stuff... very expensive but highly detailed and really nice. I miss the old Ral Partha D&D line of figures...

All right- two people at this point have voted for "no miniatures".

What do you use/do? 3E combat rules are pretty much built around miniatures and battlemats, or at least a grid and pieces. What's your alternative?

Minis, minis, minis. I love 'em. I never have enough and am always buying more (so much that the local games store will occasionally call me when they have something particularly cool in).

I guess i have about 3000 of these things and I still don't have nearly enough to satisfy my urge.

Unfortunately I am the world's slowest painter (but do produce good results when I finish).

The bulk of my collection is GW but I have decided that Reaper is more suited to my D&D needs (and I have a few old Ral Partha, Rafm and Heartbreaker - note when I say few i mean around 50 of each line :D ).

I am currently trying to buy out my local game store's collection of Call of Cthulhu minis (Spider of Leng is an awesome mini but very hard to put together).

I loved that 3E became so much easier to use with minis - a big plus in MY book.

We've been using minis for decades. Most of them are mine. Most of those are Ral Partha. I stay away for the big and bulky (grossly out of scale) minis like those from GW. of late, I have added the Counter Collections I and II as they are a cheap way to add in scale monsters for 3E.

I voted "Only during combat" but really its "Only occasionally during combat". We don't use mini's per say, usually spare dice or legos, whatever's more accessable at the time.

i absolutely adore minis.

when the group is wandering around the countryside i do the RPGA Video Game thing with just one mini for the group running around the world map then zoom in if there is an encounter.

its also very convenient in towns when parties are going in separate directions. you can just shout out "Move your mini to the house/shop/sacrificial altar your pc is going to!"

Yes, of course I use minis. Now I have to decide to go 25mm or 30mm (see "help looking for "typical 28/30 mm" thread).

I usually use them only in combat. But once I used minis exclusively while I had my player's characters explore a dungeon.

And I have a succubus mini that I wish was a "figurine of wonderous power!"

:p

Make that 3 people ;) As I run a message-based game online, minis are somewhat useless. Granted, when I have the need, I can use a combination of 2D and 3D programs, to get the same results.

Minis rule!

I have a bunch of old-school minis from back in the day that I got from a friend of mine :) Lots of cool stuff, like a 3-headed worm monster (can't remember the proper name, I think it was called something like a "horror" or a "terror" in mythology...I could be wrong though. It's been a number of years...), a war mammoth, complete with a riding area on top. A bunch of skeletons, an executioner, maiden who's about to be sacrificed, a big table, wizard, and lots more.

Course, I have a few more that I have gotten from friends recently, and some that I picked up for cheap at Gen Con...
