Mind Flayer and Cyric Vampire in Tilverton Sewers

For all you DMs out there, why would a Mind Flayer and Cyric Worshipping Vampire Spawn be found in the sewers of Tilverton?

They can have a connection or not, your discretion.

Cyric is, according to the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, interested in finding out about Shadow Weave Magic, and possibly stealing it for himself. Some minions of his could be looking for remnants of it in the Tilverton ruins.

As for the mind flayer, it could be a leftover or advance scout for the phaerimm, since they're known to use illithids, beholders, grimlocks, etc. among their servitors.

Tilverton isnt around in 3ed FR

however

The Mind Flayer is an escaped convict from the Mind Flayer prison beneath the Dales (detailed in Dungeon 92: Spirral of Manzessine)

The Vampire Spawn used to be a living follower of Cyric in Zhentil Keep but he was killed by Xvims Tyrant fog but instead of simply being killed by the Fog the Cyricist was transformed into a Vampire

Cool!

Thanks for the replies! I needed a plausible reason for these creatures here, since they were "random" encounters my PCs had a few sessions ago. Random in that I was thinking off the top of my head at the moment for things to challenge the PCs in the sewers.

This is a trick question right? Y'know, 'cause Tilverton went and got blow'd up and whatnot.

Or maybe the Mind Flayer and Cyric Vampire exist in a sort of virtual Tilverton, one on the constant cusp of both existence and non-existence. A perpetual death-rebirth loop in which the existence of the Mind Flayer and Cyric Vampire can be inferred, but never truly proven?

Thus, their motivations are a moot point. It is the fact that there may be a Mind Flayer and/or Cyric Vampire that is most fascinating.
