The phrenic scourge however is a little more similar to the mindflayer, but it has some unique features as well. Both are well done.

Agreed on that. I particularly like the phrenic scourges attack because it's slower (more terrifying really) and it's not a save-or-die equivalent.

Gary Gygax's mind flayer has been with us since 1975.
Philip J. Reed gave us a mind flayer variant called possessors (published in Possessors: Children of the Outer Gods).
Ari Marmell gave us a mind flayer variant called the phrenic scourge (published in The Iconic Bestiary -- Classics of Fantasy).
Which do you prefer, and why?

Never heard of the last two until this thread. I usually haven't bothered with third party monster books.

Those of you who never went in for Classics of Fantasy truly missed out. Best monsters I've ever seen to fill iconic (i.e., the closed content) roles.

That said, I'm afraid that for sheer staying power through the ages, it has to be mind flayers - though I prefer "illithid" by far.

First off, thanks to those who voted for the scourge. Getting any votes when the competition includes such an iconic D&D critter is heartening. :)

Well, for the record, it's not too late. The PDF is still available, and will be for the foreseeable future. :)

We're even contemplating a 4E version, once the new edition is out, though we haven't yet made a final decision. (And if we do, the 3E one would still be available; it's not like it's taking up shelf space. ;))

The phrenic scourge also appears, in its entirety, in the Tome of Artifacts, fyi.

Phrenic Scourges would be the coolest if they had decades of "how can we make X cool?" TSR / WotC writing behind it.

Deep in my heart I find ceremorphosis the most intriguing, and thus I must admit that I prefer Mind Flayers given the history.

But I'd never use them in a product (even a free one).

'Cause ya CAN'T.

Possessors are really freaking awesome. I really like what Phil reed did with them and the Christopher Shy art is amazing. It is a great small PDF to get.

I don't have the iconics monster book so the tentacle men phrenic scourges are not an option for me.

I own possessors but don't really care for them. They dry up too quickly and go through their host bodies too fast for my story tastes.

I like mind flayers a lot. Cthulhuish, underdark history with duergar and drow, githX history, spelljammer power race with cool nautiloid ships, and they are mauve. :)

Parietophages from Complete Minions by Bastion Press are another mind flayer replacement, though I like the ones from Into the Black more (palan-somethings).

Mind flayers still trump them though.
