Mind Flayer. Not being a publisher, I have no need for a Mind Flayer replacement.

I'd go with mind grub collective from hyperconscious... which is essentially the same thing as the phrenic scourge, but it actually uses the psionics rules.

If I had to pick, the scourge would be my vote. I disliked illithids when I first read about their society back in 1e days and nothing has changed my opinion (including the Ithiliad).

There is another semi-replacement from Khan's Press. Night Terrors: Alien Parasite looked like a great beginning to the NT series. Pity the author vanished soon thereafter.

I personally prefer to use the Skerrai from "Strange Lands: Lost Tribes of the Scarred Lands" by Sword & Sorcery Studios. They are sufficiently creepy, heavily psionic and designed to be a good replacement for a more traditional psionic underdark race.

A fine beginning for a D20 modern scenario! Like that Lovecraft story- "Pickman's Model" - only different.

Just a side note...I was looking at the Vinehorror creature (MMV) and thinking it would merge nicely with a Phrenic Scourge. Makes them even more...invasive.

Maybe a chance to use the Amalgam template...
