mindless eating at games

I eat too much junk these days and it is only worse at the game table. One of my players actually dropped out for a while announcing he needed to avoid all the snacking. He came back, but I totally understand where he is coming from. My group has a couple of skinny guys, but the rest of us need to lose some weight.

At my last game session, one of my players ate a "dinner" that consisted of 2 litres of chocolate milk and a packet of chocolate biscuits. He then bought a different box of biscuits from me that he saw sitting in my pantry!

Having said that, while healthy food isn't normally the order of the day at the gaming table, it isn't normally that bad. Pizza, chips, pretzels and chocolate make regular appearances. I'm the DM but I still find time to enjoy the junk food with everyone else!

I GM a Friday night game that starts at 7:30 and I have an hour before the game where I get something to eat. About half my players don't eat before the game, so there's usually a 5 minute break at the first for everyone to make their pizza order.

I find I do not like to eat while playing because I can't get a bite in, or I'm wolfiing the food down. I also do not like caffinated drinks as I will be up all night, nor do I like any alcohol, which makes me sleepy. I have my $0.99 tall boy can of Arizona Green Tea with Honey to keep me up and going! :)

Now when I get the chance to play in a couple of months, I'll probably be noshing more during the game.

I usually eat 3 or so slices of pizza, and drink about 3 beers and a soda during the average evening game session. I am the DM, but the players seem to eat about the same.

We used to joke that the DM never gets to eat, or at least, doesn't get to eat a warm meal.

We'd order food somewhere in the second half of the session (something we still do) and take a littl break, except that each person would want a moment of the GM's time to ask "one quick question" during the downtime - and the next thing you know, the break is over everyone is done eating and the GM's food is still sitting there mostly uneaten!

I refuse to take questions during the break anymore. :)

As for snacks: There is not much in the way of chips and stuff - just some soda of various kinds and coffee and bagels and/or donuts at the beginning of the session (we play at noon on sundays, so often this is people's first meal).

We use the Action Point rules from Grim Tales, by Bad Axe Games. In those, you get an extra action point at the beginning of the session if you've brought snacks. Fortunately, about half of my players are vegetarian, and so the snacks tend to be more healthy, such as fruit or veggies. Of course, we still have our cookies, or chips and salsa, too, at least on occasion...

Enjoy,
Flynn
