mindless eating at games

Yes, gaming & food are a potentially bad mix. For many weeks (maybe a year), our group ordered pizza every week. Combined with sugary drinks, I had to do something; so I started a nutrition plan from FAA. It's great. I'm rarely hungry. More often, I have trouble eating all the food on the plan. Some loved ones lost a bunch of weight on it, although that is not the main goal of the program.

I also noticed that I had bad headaches after DMing. After considereing it, I discovered that I was nto drinking enough water. I set a timer to ring each 15 minutes to remind me to drink some water. That way, I drink a couple of quarts on game night. That, and I must eat a proper meal. It's funny how such basic needs can be problematic if unmet.

I think I'll go look for that ENWorld weight loss thread now...

I started bringing veggie trays to games because I was eating too much junk food.

We got to the point where everyone chipped in, usually -- a little XP bonus for contributing to the group's fun is a great incentive.

I've actually decided to start bringing fruit to my sunday game. I would wager I eat 20% of my calories for the week on that one day alone just from the crap I eat.

Plus, if nature calls more often, that's more chances for you to take a quick break and get your head together for the next encounter or whathaveyou. :) Just keep an extra set of DM notes in the restroom! :D

You know, 20% of your weekly calories isn't really that terrible when you think about it...

I mean, if you spread them out evenly, you'd eat 14.28% each day. If you eat 20% one day and the rest evenly for the rest of the week, you're eating 13.33% of your calories each of those other days...

So really, doesn't actually change all that much.

I long ago banned all eating and drinking at the gaming table. It may sound draconian, but after so many spilled drinks on my expensive gaming books and greasy dice, the line had to be drawn.

Do the players not have their own dice? Ditto for their own books? At the very least, are they not aware of basic courtesy, such as not gunking up someone else's stuff?

If someone spilled something on one of my books, there'd be a curb stompin'.

I certainly have a weakness for a great many snacks and candies, and mindless eating is one of my bad habits - if it's there, I'll eat it. Our groups have mostly had a "bring your own" kind of food philosophy, unless we're celebrating a birthday (cake and ice cream). Occasionally, people bring things to share, but since I've gone back to weight watchers and dragged my husband with me, we've asked people to not bring things to share (or at least to share with us!) and our group is pretty kind about it. Now it's down to my own self control and limiting the number of snacks we bring (because you can still overdo even on "healthy" snacks - and I'll pretty much eat it if it's there). *sigh*
