mindless eating at games

In high school, we'd amass all kinds of junk food and soda at the table. The caffeine/sugar fueled arguments that inevitably erupted were epic. Frothing at the mouth, quivering teenagers spitting bile and hatred at one another. "How dare you take that +2 longsword!" "Go back to DM school, you moron!" Oh how we gnashed our teeth and wailed in the moonlight, barely able to keep hormones, teenage awkwardness and sugar highs in check.

*sigh*

Memories!

PS: Read Iridia or it gets the hose again.

We used to have lots of snacks, but we have backed off of that due to one case of heart surgery and the rest of us trying to loose weight. Sometimes my wife will make hummus and pita chips or dip (cottage cheese based rather than sour cream) and veggies, or on rare occasions someone brings a special snack. Generally, however, we start playing at 2 on Saturday and stop about 6 or 6:30 and have water or cokes available, and if someone is desperate there is the cookie/chip reserve but often that doesn't get touched. We then either go somewhere to eat that we know is going to take a while (like tonight it will be Indian food at Silver Coin - great but not a place to go in a rush) or if we need to wrap something up we go somewhere that will be faster (generally mexican or quasi-fastfood/mediterranean at the Purple Onion) and come back and play for an hour or so.

EDIT: When there are snacks I eat them, as a player, and usually don't as a DM.

You know, it is pretty true that if the game does not cross traditional mealtimes (noon or maybe 6pm), folks tend to bring little or no food to the games I'm in. They bring their own beverages, usually, and those are either diet or a controlled amount of the substance (you can mindlessly drink until you are out, then you stop).

One of my groups has done a very good, conscious job of bringing veggies, meat/cheese, and diet soda/bottle water, and someone in that group almost always makes "real food" to warm up and serve as an actual meal (something in a crock pot or the like). An actual meal is "thoughtful" rather than "mindless" and is much easier for me to estimate caloric content. On gamedays when I have just munched mindlessly, I find it very hard to guess how many calories I've eaten for the purposes of recording in my food journal.

There's a Purple Onion up here in Middle Tennessee, but I sure wouldn't eat anything I found in there!!

we game midweek, there's normally some snacks (crisps & dips) and everyone brings their own drinks (beer for host, soft drinks for the drivers)

the only issue is when someone gets caught at work and arrives with dinner in bag. sandwiches are ok but nuke em burgers or pizza's tend to make me drool even if i've just finished my own food. Having said that when i Dm, my significant other tends to make sure I have at least a sarnie before i start since I'm often late out of work, and will often order a pizza to arrive when I do :-). So its probably the other players who have to watch DM mainlining pizza and cold lager before the game gets properly under way.

To paraphrase from Pulp Fiction, "English, good sir, do you speak it?" :) I know that crisps are chips and I can sort of guess what a nuke 'em burger is... but what the heck is a sarnie?

Just FYI:

Number of years left in college + 2 = number of years until you get fat from pizza and beer.

Just one more reason to take your time in college!

A sandwich.

Oh, and in case there was any doubt, a "nuke 'em" burger is one meant to be reheated in the microwave.

We really need to start an EN World Weight Loss Support Club thread in Off Topic. We did something similar with quitting smoking awhile back, and a few EN Worlders were able to quit for good, which is a great thing.

I lost a lot of weight this summer, and while I was very active physically this year, I attribute most of the loss to leaving my job of ten years where they used to literally force feed us constantly with free lunches, junk food and baked goods. Now that I consult and work from home, there's no more temptation. :)

As for gaming, I don't mind non alcoholic beverages at the table, but we usually get up and take a "snack break" rather than eat during the game.
