mindless eating at games

Ironically, I'm currently munching down a tuna sub before the gang shows up in 15 minutes. I eat ahead of time and stay away from the greasy snacks (though my other group has been bringing celery and carrots lately...I have less problem staying away from them though, too, happymediumville is a nice place to eat).

The annoying thing is that everyone brings diet drinks to the game but I hate the taste of diet drinks. They'll eat pizza and any other insanely fattening foods...but they only drink diet drinks :]

I've gotten to the point where I can't stand to drink regular soda anymore, tastes like sugar water. And I don't like beer, so it's diet soda, juice or water for me, which is just jim dandy fine .

We typically eat prior to the game session, and often together. We'll take occasional breaks to go grab whatever dessert like snackage someone brought (cakes, cookies, etc). We take the breaks so that the DM (usually me) gets a fair shot at them. Actually, come to think of it, since I usually call the breaks (and usually sit closest to the kitchen) I usually get the first, best shot. :D

For our group (a bunch of college students), snacks at the table consist of a bag of chips and salsa, possibly supplemented with a bag of Doritos. We usually game all day, so we have a lunch break, during which we usually eat something fast and easy (pasta, canned soup, etc.) Each of us maybe drinks 1 can of soda. I guess we're not big munchers.

One exception to that is individually wrapped fruit snacks, the actual type being irrelevant. For some reason everyone else in my group will eat those things ravenously. I've never seen anything like it. Our DM will go through 12-15 packs of those in an hour or two if you let him.

I find that if there is a ton of food, I'll just dig in and eat, barely stopping to consider what's goin' in my gut.

If I'm DMing, though ... I'm so busy I don't have time to eat. I'm usually starving after the guys leave!

So how 'bout you .... is gaming and food a deadly mix? Do your groups have certain rules about not bringing certain foods that are sure to weaken a particular player's resolve? (I play with a guy who always brings Sun Chips, much to our DM's dismay -- because he has a particular weakness for them). Do you have food rituals?

4E will fix this problem for you, I read it on the interweb.

I find it hard to find the right balance. I either barely bring anything, and end up starving the whole game - not helped by watching everyone else scarf their snackage. Or, I end up bringing what I consider a fair mix of stuff - usually a "crunchy" like Doritos, a "sweet" like candy orange slices, and jerky - and eat enough that I really regret it afterward.

It doesn't help that we game from noon to six, and my body starts begging for a nap between 2 and 3, and I've found I can trick it into not being tired if I eat pretty much constantly during that time. :\

Years ago we used to do the chips, softdrink routine. Nowadays we eat real food - mrs. Arrgh is a relatively new cook and so tries new things all the time. Even our snacks are adult snacks - cheeses, dips, pepperoni, pickled onions and the like.

I must admit I'm avoiding that 2'oclock burnout syndrome nowadays. We generally start about 12 and play till around 5 - 6, depending, and so the original gobbled sugar rush burnout doesn't happen.

You know that incredible surge of energy at the start and the slow, tired feeling you have after a few hours of DMing? Try avoiding sugar. It's hard to do at first but you actually last a hell of a lot longer in terms of endurance; your overall quality will go up as well, I guarantee it.

Unless of course you are in college or high school; the strange ability of the 16-20 -something male to eat anything and gain long lasting energy and nourishment is in full force then.

Well, I'm diabetic, so we don't usually have a whole lot of high-sugar stuff at our tables anyways, except for the energy drinks my brother's so fond of.

Usually, the players will spring in for a pizza that they eat, and I just dig through my cupboards for something I can eat (I usually have rice or pasta cooking when the players show up, that I chomp on). really, it's "everyone feed yourself", because in our group of six, we have a diabetic, a vegetarian, a vegan, and one guy who loves mustard and hates mayo, and one guy who loves mayo and hates mustard.

I usually go through 2 litres of diet coke in one session... and each session is less than four hours. Needless to say, I take a lot of pee breaks. ;)
