Miniature Scales??

Does anyone remember what scale the old Ral Partha D&D miniatures were?
Or, more to the point, would 20mm figures work ok on the standard 1" square grid battlemat?

Thanks in advance

The old RP minis were 25mm scale.

Minis nowadays are being sculpted at larger scales like 28mm and 30mm. The 28mm are usually referred to as 'Heroic' scale.

A 20mm miniature will look tiny in comparison to a true 25mm or 28mm minuature but you can use any scale that you feel comfortable with on a battlemat.

old 25mm scale miniatures from a Ral Partha or a Grenadier or RAFM were generally measured from the bottom of the feet to the top of the head. Currently, the more common 28-32mm miniatures measure from the feet to the eyes, as sometimes the top of the head might have a big pointy hat on top of it - a la Games Workshop High Elves or Chaos Dwarves.

But, that effectively makes a current 28mm miniature more than just 3mm taller than old 25mm miniatures.

Actually, 25's have been measured in various ways in the past 25 years.
Bottom of base to top of head or helmet.
Bottom of foot to top of head or helmet.
Bottom of foot to eye level.
Bottom of foot to top of shoulder.

There may have been more. The reason? 25mm is a measurement, not a true scale. (i.e. 1:72)

Any other companies besides Citadel and Reaper that makes 30mm miniatures?

A French company (Rackham?) makes a line of really fantastic minis called Confrontation which are 30mm. Try the newwavegames website; there should be plenty of pics there. (I wouldn't recommend buying from NewWave, but you dont have a lot of choices for getting some of these more rare figures.)

I've personally been afraid to buy an Confrontation until my skills become good enough to do them justice. ;-)

I thought of confrontation, not sure what size they were though. Best minis i've seen, they're beautifull. I advise against ordering from New Wave also, i ordered something last month and I have yet to hear from them. A few more days and i'm looking into pressing charges for sales fraud, we'll see how it turns out.
