Miniatures or Counters?

I could give two hoots about miniatures. They're expensive, and typically, I don't like the way they look (preferring a more "realistic" fantasy game over some of the wild looking minis out there).

But, I would like some type of counters to use in my Conan game. Since it is "Conan", I need human likenesses, and I need a lot of barbarian types (for the Vanir, Aesir, Cimmerians).

Now, I'll buy a couple of actual miniatures if I can find some I like and are not too expensive. I want them to look "realistic" though. And, I'd prefer them to be painted already.

Anybody know where I can find some counters or minis to fit my needs?

Thanks.
If you can print your own counters (and Fiery Dragon has a step-by-step here), you could get the Counter Collections for Iron Heroes and Greek Counters of Doom (which covers Sean K Reynolds' New Argonauts).

I am a big believer in making your own counters. It's very simple, and can be done for free, minus the printing of the actual paper and a couple bucks for metal washers.

I enjoy using minis but this is what I was doing for my Deadlands game because it was tough finding the sort of minis I wanted. My wife has loads of scrapbooking stuff so I just use the circle puncher from that. I've found that if I print it on light cardstock then it's substantial enough that I don't even feel I need to mount it on a token.

I did this for the Savage Worlds Space: 1889 game I ran at GenCon and I fit every token for the entire game in a space that was 1 inch wide and 3/8 of an inch tall. Great option for traveling games where you don't want to lug a pile of minis all over the place.

I followed NewbieDM's guide to making counters out of metal washers, and it's been great! Now I've moved on to trying a digital projector setup, so I'll be using virtual monsters, but whenever I need physical representations of a creature I'm going with the washer tokens a la NewbieDM.

That step-by-step says

Once you assemble a counter list for your adventure, there are a number ways to do it but there are two specific methods that we recommend. The easiest way is to download the free counter template sheets found on our website. There are 4 different templates, all in PDF form, allowing for counters 1” to 4” square sizing.

I searched the site for "template" and couldn't find them; wish they had just made "found on our website" a link.

I probably won't use them though, because I like the counters to stand up. I print them out with two facing each other and I fold them along the center line like a sandwich board. They end up looking like this and the large and huge ones tower over the characters' minis just like they're supposed to.

Humans is the one area where I don't always use counters -- I love them for monsters, they're so much more specific and Photoshoppable than minis, and even easier to identify with the clean Fiery Dragon art. I like the humans in the Iron Heroes preview and I'll pay for it the first time I actually use a token out of there.
