Minis, Tokens, or Both?

I use minis for the PCs and (surprise, surprise!) Fiery Dragon's counters for everything else. Although I do have some really big dragons I want to plop on the table at some point... :D

I made a whole bunch of numbered and variously colored tokens out of polymer clay a few years ago. It really makes keeping track of the monsters much nicer than trying to use chits of paper or other un-numbered items (including minis).

I do have a whole assortment of spiders, bugs, alligators, some wild animals, dinosaurs, dragons, etc... in plastic, and a FEW real DnD monster minis - they are more fun to see, but actually harder to use because they're not clearly numbered. The players are so used to the numbers that they routinely tell me which monster is which number and then refer to it that way in combat. It makes things much faster for me.

For the 4e game I DM, we use minis for the characters and Fiery Dragon counters for the opponents. But I plan on using minis for some of the more prominent opponents further down the road.

We use index cards cut up into 1"x1" squares and marked with pictures of our characters' faces we printed off, and for enemies we use the same index card squares (except for creatures of non-medium size), but with color coded stickers and numbers, so our dm can keep track of which monster is which in any given fight.

It works perfectly, and costs next to nothing, which for a bunch of broke new york twenty-somethings, is pretty sweet.

I am currently rebuilding our gaming table for overhead projector usage - than all monsters and npcs will be digital Tokens :) Maybe the PCs will stay Minis, I am not sure yet

Just want to know if any of you mix both tokens and minis? I would love to use just miniatures, but it get very expensive, and using tokens, while much less expensive, doesn't have that "wow" factor the 3D minis have.

So I wanna get a general idea of what you guys use, and if anyone doesn't mind mixing 'em up.

Thanks!

We mix it up for sure, but generally we have minis for the players and tokens for mobs/other - with some variations from time to time ;)

Glad to hear most of you mix 'em up! Been using tokens but have a few D&D minis lying around. Will give the players minis, and some of my major baddies minis too. The rest of them can stay tokens :)

Minis for PCs, tokens for monsters.
Thank god for Fiery Dragon's counter collections... I've got over 1000 monster tokens for any ocassion.

(Actually, only half are from Fiery Dragon, the other half are courtesy of WoTC photo gallery and judicious crop/resize)
