He doesn't need to - the warlords need to be within melee weapon range of the enemy, so with reach weapons, they can be anywhere within two squares. And they don't need to be adjacent to the dragonborn warlock.

The eye of grummsh is probably the first foe the PCs will face that has an at-will minor attack. It has an at-will attack that imposes a -4 AC (save ends) as a minor action. Very annoying, but it can curse up to three PCs per round.
