D&D 5E Minor Illusion...can it be cast over other objects?

So would you say that you can create an appearance of depth without the physical space for that depth to fit in (ie - can you create a roadrunner-style fake tunnel on a wall?)

While I hear many DMs wouldn't I myself allow illusions to create apparent depth, examples being the above portal, or more commonly something like a pit in the ground the enemies would avoid.

Personally I'm always keen to give illusion the benefit of the doubt, because to do otherwise makes it an incredibly weak school.
