Such spines and all can be usefull, ya know... deflect hits, hurts things like giant snakes...

...accidentally pin you to a tree when on guard duty, get you caught in a narrow cave opening, damaging allies when you are pushing them to safety, etc. :D

Not to mention, that spikes make excellent weapon traps, causing the enemy's weapon to expend its force against your armor, rather than glancing off. ;)

Heh. Funny.

The spiked armor bothered me for a while too. Then I thought some more about how many monsters have Improved Grab and/or outrageous grapple scores. In such a world it might be perfectly sensible to have some sharp edges.

I personally like a few spikey bits on my characters as well.

Nothing too excessive mind you, but it can add just the right touch... :)

I don't mind spikes like that, but I like them as things you pay to have attached to your armour. Not coming with it, so you can have your spikes if you pay to have them placed on it.

You'd think they'd be broad-based spikes instead of skinny ones that concentrate the inward force on one point and/or are easy to break off, though.

Heh, just saw this in the Tiefling description from the PHB: "Tieflings favor dark colors and reds, leathers and glossy furs, small spikes and buckles."
