Misprounced Monsters; Or... What did you call that monster, again?

Appearantly, I pronounce every name in Wheel of Time, I screw it up.

Because Jordan is overly fond of neologisms and even resorts to the cliche overuse of apostrophes. Are they aspirations, glottal stops or what? It's like any day now he's gonna have someone named '''''''

And I always thought it was Jubilex until I read the post above. I refuse to change, however.

Okay, so how is Ioun supposed to be pronounced? I've always given it a slightly Welsh interpretation, but I am open to suggestion.

"Jubilex" seems a common variation used for the correct "Juiblex" (didn't realize I had in wrong until the last couple of years).

Same here. I actually don't think I realized I had it wrong until we started compiling monsters for Tome 1 or Chaos Rising (and subsequently renamed Juiblex to Jubilex).

When we were kids, my friends and I all pronounced this stuff differently. What are you going to do when you can't find it in a dictionary, your parents don't even know (gasp!) and you all read it separately?

We had:

platinum: pal-uh-TAIN-ee-um
paladin: puh-LAD-din
mutant: MOO-tant
melee: muh-LEE

Don't even get me started on how to pronounce the pole-arms--or even what they looked like, for that matter!

"YO-un" (you know, I should really look up how to write Welsh phonetically, since I am missing a bit of inflection there). I know someone named Ioan and he pronounces his name as "Yo-an" so I use that as the basis for my pronunciation of Ioun.

My mispronunciation of note came when I was reading flavor text, and having an off night while trying to multitask. I was not paying attention to what I was reading and pronounced translucent, "Trans-SUCK-yoo-lent". I know what translucent is, what it means and what it does...and how to pronounce it.

Three years. I still have not been able to live it down.

Me: So you come up to a translucent wall...

Them: No, no! Don't you mean transuckyoulent? BAHAHAHAH!

I go with "Eye-oon". I'm not even sure why. Looking at it now shouldn't "oun" be the same as in "round" and "sound"? So "Eye oww n"

A friend of mine pronounced "lich" as "leech".

I pronounce ioun as "EYE-oon".

Add me to the "Juiblex/Jubilex" confusion list as well.
