MM2 Excerpt: Remorahz

Now that sure beats the 4 lines of fluff that come with the 4E article :-)
Except that a picture is worth a couple hundred words. :) Speaking of which, why is the illo shown with the article so much better than the one in the PDF? Odd. Restrained plus 20 ongoing is pretty nasty, but I agree, it does seem less deadly than before.

As Yesnomu said, anyone who can get Fire Resistance 10[...]

Such as any tiefling character - a level 20 tiefling has 15 fire res without boosting it with feats or PP:s (can't be bothered to look up any). Not that i mind that specific example - racial abilities should matter.

Thinks: it is an epic foe. How easy/hard is it to get resist 10 fire at epic levels?

Firesoul Genasi get resist 10 fire at level 11 (and resist 15 fire at L21). Still racial, no biggie.
Dragonsoul sorcerers can choose fire resistance and will have 10 at level 11. Wild magic sorcerers roll a d10 for their resistance after an extended rest, and fire is one of the possible results.

Level 14 Black Iron Armor (scale/plate) gives resist 10 fire.
Level 14 Flamedrinker Armor (plate) gives resist 10 fire, and can give allies within range 5 resist 20 fire for a turn.
L19 Cloak of Survival, resist 10 fire.
(Items from PHB1 only, not slogging through the rest.)

The Radiant One (Epic Destiny) gains resist 10+level to "radiant fire" at level 21. Bit late, maybe.
The Prince Of Hell (Epic Destiny too) gains resist 20+half level at L21. Same problem.

Paragon Path resistances seem to be more temporary, but a Wildfire Genasi can share its fire resistance with any ally within 2 squares. (Mang, that's nuts - not just when fighting Remorhazes.)

Not checking powers, probably just temporary fire resist anyway. I don't see much of a problem, though. Two strongly fire-themed races and three sets of equipment (heavy armor or a cloak) let you ignore the Remorhaz' aura. Meh.

Are they going to use the wonderful artwork of the lone traveller being surprised by the Remorhaz (the picture with the castle in the background)? I sure hope so. The art in the PDF-excerpt is very dull in comparison (and I seem to remember it from an earlier D&D-product, is it a reprint?).

Yeah, it's a reprint. I guess it's from the 3e monster manual, Sam Wood has his name on it. A good enough pic, but the OTHER one spanks the pants off it.

i'm a little bothered by the fact too that this thing does base fire damage 10 to essentially upper paragon or low epic characters, which is fairly trivial. It would be interesting to have a mechanic that negated the first 5 or 10 points of fire resistance....

Yes.

The picture in the PDF is the same Sam Wood picture used for the Remorhaz since the 3e MM. While it is good, the one on the website is awesome. The only reason for not using it that I can see is space...

Man, tieflings could LIVE inside that remorhaz. Fire resistance 5 + half-level means no damage at 10th level.

Yeah, space otherise used for all those Encounter Groups i will never ever ever ever ever ever use.

Technically, being swallowed deals 10 normal damage + 10 fire, so fire resistance doesn't help entirely.

You'd think fire giants and fire archons would be interested in taming Remohazes. I guess they only want to use MM2 monsters in the encounter groups.

Well, it's not that so much as remohazes and fire giants just don't live in the same climate. They would never have the chance to meet.
