MM2 Excerpt: Remorahz

I was noticing the resistances to typed damage a lot in the 26th one-shot game I ran yesterday. Two Divas both had resistance to 18 necrotic damage. A fair number of undead nasties did very little damage. At one point a spectre used a necrotic blast and hit all four players. I heard "resist, resist, resist, gain temp hps".

I have no idea how to kill a 26th level player these days and resistances play a big part in that.

I have no idea how to kill a 26th level player these days and resistances play a big part in that.

One-shots at higher levels always seem to favor the players. Start at the bottom and work your way up, and I am sure you will find that they aren't as hard to kill as you think now.

Man, tieflings could LIVE inside that remorhaz. Fire resistance 5 + half-level means no damage at 10th level.
Dude. I now need to have a parasitic tiefling guiding around a giant remorahz from inside its belly, like a gnome inside an Apparatus of Kwalish -- only deadlier.

Let me guess: Mariah and Celine?

lol, I noticed that too. B-)

One minor at-will, but that one is quite conditional

Hmmm? All he has to do is hit someone with his bite. Certainly conditional, but it's an easy condition to meet.

I think the remorahz is looking mighty fine for an elite. Once the big guy is in the right position, using his AP to bite two targets & swallow them both would be hilarious! As written the two targets wouldn't be able to help one another while inside the beast - maybe it has multiple stomachs - so isolating a good chunk of the party would really screw things up for them! Then start trampling & immolating the rest of the party. Or if you're a mean DM, eat some PCs, trample over the rest next round, and burrow away - make them chase the remorahz down into its tunnel!

The low-end fire damage on the aura & swallow isn't really an issue in my mind. I think a solo remorahz could benefit from having another energy keyword added to his fire powers though! Maybe acid or poison...

I could completely go with the internal damage being 10 (acid and fire) damage... take the least of your two resistances. Yes, I could completely go with that :)

I'd either use for internal damage either:
1) 10 normal + 20 fire: lots of static fire damage
2) 10 normal + 5d6 fire: possibly the same but possibly more fire.
3) 10 normal +10 acid + 10 fire: acid and fire lowers chance of resisting.

I think the coolest thing in this thread is the wiki entry that mentions the Remorhaz melting snow and bursting out of it.

I just go the idea of melted snow being difficult; a sudden avalanche of a shifting snowbank, and the terrain. But then, epic level characters can so beat the pants off treacherous terrain.

Well, it's not that so much as remohazes and fire giants just don't live in the same climate. They would never have the chance to meet.

If they get hot enough to kill you on contact in the frozen tundra, I think they'd spontaneously melt if you transported one anywhere much hotter. Rather like a polar bear: sure, a thick coat of very heat-retaining fur is great in the tundra, but that doesn't mean it's a good fit for the heart of your secret volcano dungeon.
