Module Suggestions for a Newbie DM

Oh, and when I say Newbie, I mean I wouldn't have DM until I do so with the module.

I'd prefer a lower level starting module, think levels 1-3, I am willing to try something that requires higher levels but only if it is so kickin' that one can't resist doing so.

Anyway, I want to try my hand at DMing and think that going with a Module is probably the best place to start. So does anybody have any suggestions, and why in particular do you feel that your suggestion is one of the better choices?

I'd go with Sunless Citedel. It's fairly easy to run and it has few problems. It's made for low levels and has been pretty well recieved by many people.
 

I'd go with either Sunless Citadel or Of Sound Mind. Both are excellent adventures, and they both have lots of tips in them for new DMs (reminders of when skills can be used, summaries of various rules, etc).

Keep On The Borderlands, from 1st Edition, the remake for 2nd Edition, and the same module put out by Hackmaster--though not specifically 3E, can be easily converted.

Keep On The Borderlands is a good setting, with a great deal of room for you to incorporate role-playing, history, and richly detailed background, as well as wilderness encounters and dungeon-crawling. There are many very cool things in there for a new DM, as well as for low-level player-characters, from levels 1-4 or so.

I highly recommend it, and with but a little thought and some work on your part, you should be off to a very good campaign, and fun adventure!:)

You may want to take a look at the Your favorite 1st level module? thread. Although some older modules are great (Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh) or ideal for the newbie DM (Keep on the Borderlands), I think you're best served by a 3E module that spells everything out for you. With that in mind, I can't imagine a more natural choice than The Sunless Citadel.

You might also look at The Wizards Amulet (free on-line) and its follow-up, The Crucible of Freya (not free, but lots of free add-ons).
 


Another thing you may want to check if you want a realy easy and light beginning is the adventure game box. It has all material you'l need (including dice) and has six adventures, each being a bit more involved than the previous one. There is also lots of advice for a begining DM.

I started out by DM'ing this box and restarted my group "for real" with the sunless citadel".

Let me second that. It's a great little set -- and the mini-adventures are bite-sized and easy to get through.
 

If you are a Newbie DM with Newbie players the adventure box is a great start.

If you are a Newbie who would prefer to not have to keep track of tons of variables, then I would go with Nemoren's Vault.

If you want to have multiple NPCS that you are keeping track of and using but still have a pretty linear adventure, then I would go with Sunless Citadel.

If you want to have a more story-driven first time out, then go with Crucible of Freya.
 

Ilen, if you're DMing for the people online that we both know, then don't use Wizard's Amulet or Sunless Citadel. I ran the latter for several of them a while back, and my online game that you briefly played in borrowed heavily from the former.

I would try the Kalamar adventure Aldriv's Revenge, or the Freeport adventures, or maybe Thieves in the Forest by Penumbra.

If, on the other hand, you are DMing for a different group, then I think you'd like Wizard's Amulet. It's free too. Download it from the Necromancer Games website.:)
