Module Synopsis-Undying Love

Ralts Bloodthorne

OK-Straight up. If you cannot handle a mature topic like homosexuality, and a descent into madness and evil, better jack out of this thread.
That being said, let's get on with it.

Background
Many years ago, and adventuring group made quite a bit of fame for themselves. Included in this group was a Paladin and a Mage.
The Paladin (insert campaign specific name here) was a devout servant of his god, an upstanding Knight, and his name was revered by thousands. He was seen as a champion of Good, and a constant thorn in evil's side.
But he had one secret, kept from all but himself and his god.
While many admired his chastity, none knew that it was because he was homosexual, and even more, was deeply in love with the wizard (insert campaign specific name here)
Then, the fatal day came when the adventuring party was nearly wiped out in a terrible battle. The mage was badly wounded, but survived, the Paladin dying, and the rest of the party was dead. The mage's spells were depleted, and he watched helplessly as the Paladin's life spilled from his wounds.
"Why did you leap before such a horrible strike?" the wizard asked, "You would have lived, and my spells would have protected me?"
"Because I have loved you for over a decade. My heart could not stand the thought of the forces of evil harming my beloved." the Paladin gasped, the blood flow from his horrible wounds slowing as his life force flickered.
"And I love thee too, my stalwart companion." the mage replied, blinking back tears. Such comradely devotion, such honor.
"Then, grant me this boon, beloved, kiss me before I die." the Paladin whispered. The mage granted his request, and was surprised by the passion and intesity of the kiss. Although his friend died during the kiss, the mage remembered the love the Paladin had for him, and how much emotion and love was shared in a kiss interrupted by death's cruel grasp.
Having sworn vengeance upon those that killed the Paladin, the wizard performed the cruelest of deaths, with all of the savagery he could command with his mastery of the arcane arts, upon those that killed the man who loved him, and those who supported him. Always, he performed these tasks personally, without aid, and with dark vengeance.
In the end, he turned into a lich, to face the lich whose plan had resulted in the death of the Paladin, who had truly, purely, and without remorse had loved the wizard, despite his flaws.
The lich was cast down, and in doing so, the Wizard met and defeated the lich's guardian, his luietenant.
A Death Knight.
Now, the wizard has a plan. He has returned to the Paladin't grave, to find it despoiled and plundered. He gathered up the corpse of the one who loved him, the only one who ever loved or cared about him, and secereted the body of the noble Paladin away in his private haven.
Then, the Wizard went forth to extract revenge upon those who had despioled his loves tomb, and to retrieve the items that the Paladin had worn during his life.
If the Paladin had been denied him in life, and he had been denied that Paladin's love in life, then they would share thier love in unlife. He as a lich, the Paladin as a Death Knight.
Horrible were the deaths of those who had aquired the Paladin's armor, sword, lance, shield and spurs, a terrible fate that made all who heard of shiver will the chill touch of fear.
Now, he has begun preperations to return his love to hideous unlife, so they can share the pure love that he briefly, tantalizingly tasted in the kiss that he shared with the Paladin, before death so cruelly tore him away from the Wizard.

Getting the party involved....
A paladin or Cleric will have a visitation by the spirit of the Paladin, whom has been gathered to the bosom of the God of Justice, and who has watched his beloved's descent into evil and madness with sadness and regret.
The spirit of the Paladin will admit to the cleric or paladin he visits that he feels that it was his own cowardice, his own fear of rejection that made the Wizard go mad. By not confessing his love until his dying breath, the kiss came to mean more and more to the Wizard, until it constantly burned in the Wizard's brain.
The spirit of the Paladin will plead with the cleric or paladin he visits to put a stop to this monsterous act.

The Twist...
The spirit of the Paladin does not want the Wizard killed. Even in death he still loves him. Instead, the Paladin wishes the party to convince the Wizard to give up his cruel ways, perform penance, and them give up his unlife and join the Paladin in the arms of the God of Justice. He wants the ceremony stopped, the ceremony that will turn the Paladin into a Death Knight, and the Wizard to attone for his evil, not be struck down during the time of his unbearable pain.

Vengeance....
Should the party slay the Wizard, the Paladin will be consumed with thoughts of vengeance and hatred, and immediately move from the spirit world, into his old body, his love of the God of Justice immediately turned to hatred, and the Paladin will become a Blackguard/Death Knight. His first action will be to grasp the Lich's body, and fight his way free of the party, using every ability at his disposal.
From there, he will bring back the mage to hideous unlife as a lich, and embark upon a campaign of terror upon a world that laid such a cruel fate upon them.
The party will have gained two VERY powerful foes, and a powerful force of evil will have been made even worse.
Sooner or later, people will find out, and the party's reputation will suffer. The Gods will know immediately, and act appropriately to the campaign.
Paladin's and Clerics of Good, Law or Justice, may find themselves stripped of thier powers, until they atone for it by persuading the undead couple to repent, and atone.

So, what do you think? Sound like fun?

Sounds like a good scenario though I still wondering why the homosexual theme is required at all.

NB in my games homosexuality is seen as normal so it alone wouldn't be enough of a rationale for the above stroyline. However the idea of unfulfilled love and the power of a dying kiss is a wonderful tragic motif upon which to build the story regardless of gender.

I like the idea of the Liches descent into madness and evil due to a selfless act of good by the paladin

I'd make the PC hook something more subtle then the Paladin commissions them to save his soul.

Perhaps they are bodyguards for one of the Liches intended victims (and so begin with the disadvantage of being firends of my enemy)

Perhaps they are on a pilgrimage to visit the paladins tomb and find it despoiled....

First of all:
Thanks for the reply. It's nice to see a reply to this.

Why the homosexuality? Simple. It gives a decent reason for the Paladin to be afriad to admit his love, and the Wizard to be totally clueless about it. You live together with someone for 10 years, and you'll realize that that member of the opposite sex might dig you. Plus, it gives something for the deceased Paladin to actually regret in the House of the Dead. I've also noticed, many homosexual people are tenative as far as thier emotions are concerns (but that is just those I have met)

Why the heavy handed handling of the getting the PC's involved?

Simple. The Paladin also wants the lich to be persuaded to give up his evil ways and atone. That's harder for PC's to do. Any gibbering mental deficient with a bar of iron he calls a sa-ward to bash down the lich, it's a whole new ball game to aviod killing him.

Although I do like the idea of the PC's visiting the grave to find it despoiled, but what if it was despoiled and then lovingly repaired, and that's when the Paladin appears and charges them with this request.

As for a reward, I was thinking, the Paladin and the now lich Wizard wish the Paladin's body to be interred with his weapons, and when the lich is ready to give up his immortal existance, then he wishes to be interred with his wand, staff and robe.
That leaves the wizards books, alchemical labs, deeds to land, and some alchemical equipment.

Now, girding the lion in his lair, so to speak, lowers the options of the spells that the Wizard would be able to use. No area of effect spells, since it might damage the delicate equipment, or the Paladin's body. That makes it into an interesting fight, and possibly a way around killing the lich by damaging or threatening equipment.

I read your scenario with great interest - thanks for sharing. I agree with Tonguez that it could work equally as well as a hetero thing ( perhaps he/she has sworn a vow of celabacy as a requirement of her/his order, and that is why she/he could never profess his love openly ), but that doesn't really matter.

These NPC's were probably of fairly high level, so the first question that would come to mind as a player would be why the wizard could not manage some sort of resurrection...

It DOES sound like fun. Let us know how it turns out.

Best,

Joe

i've just taken this to add to my ideas list... so thanks. sounds great, but a bit beyond my players at the moment...
