Momento Mori spell from ELH

Kai Lord

Hero
"Your bloodthirsty wish snuffs out the lifeforce of a living creature of 160 or fewer HD, killing it instantly."

160 HIT DICE?????????

Nothing in any rulebook has anywhere close to that amount. Why didn't they just say, "...snuffs the lifeforce of a living creature of a jillion bajillion or fewer HD, killing it instantly."

They obviously meant 160 hit points. The errata begins.... ;)

MOMENTO MORI

Necromancy [Death]
Spellcraft DC: 86
Components: None
Casting Time: 1 Quickened Action
Range: 300 ft.
Target: One Living Creature
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude Partial (See text)
Spell Resistance: Yes
To Develop: 774,000 gp; 16 days; 30,960 XP. Seed: slay (DC 25). Factor: increase to 160 HD (+8 DC), quickened (+28 DC), no verbal or somatic components (+4 DC), +10 to DC of subject's save (+20 DC).

Your passing thought connotes death for the target. As a free action that counts as a quickened spell, you will the target dead without a word or gesture. Your bloodthirsty wish snuffs out the life force of a living creature of 160 or fewer HD, killing it instantly. The subject is entitled to a Fortitude saving throw (DC 30 + relevant ability modifier) to have a chance of surviving the attack. If the save is successful, the target instead takes 3d6+20 points of damage.

Question is.....would that spell be powerful enough to take out Ao (from FR)?

The question is if you have time to cast it before he sees your intent and does something nasty to you before you finish casting it. Quickened spell or not.

I don't know the save DC of 30 + Attribute Modifier isn't very high. (As far as high level stuff goes) Most gods would make that save no problem. And hey by the time you can reasonably expect someone to cast this spell, Ressurection is no big deal. Having not seen the ELH yet, I can't say what fort saves are like for epic level creatures, but I would assume quite a few could handle this.

Seems like a cool epic version of Power Word Kill. I would assume 160HD is correct.

Yeppers- it is correct (like KReynolds said above). And it really isnt anything more than an epic version of power word kill. It might be slightly unbalanced if it killed a number of creatures (160 HD or less) equal to the caster's level in a 30-foot radius and didn't allow a save or something.
