Moments you live for in D&D gaming

It has to be those moments that you are still talking about years later. When it all comes together. When the character takes on a life of his own and you play true to that character despite the costs and still come out on top.

It was a straightforward job, but something didn't feel right to my character. It was just a hunch but ... So he worked the connections he had built and pulled in favours he had earned. The rest of the team was starting to getting ansy and he had to push for more time. Then he struck paydirt. It was a setup. Payback. They had done a job some time before, "recovering" something that had not actually been stolen (until they stole it - without a single kill). So then the team set to work again and turned the trap into one of their own. The were supposed to end up dead, they walked away rich. And not a shot was fired the whole campaign. It was gripping. Perfect.

He went in personally for the pick up. To apologise to the injured party. (I loved the look on the GM's face when I pulled that one out of the bag.) And to suggest that next time she wanted something done, she go to a professional. And to give her his card ('cos she was cute).

OK. Enough about me.

Splipping in bad puns and obscure references that most of the gaming group are unlikley to get. The ones that groan in despair are the ones who get it.

Describing an encounter set-up so well that it feels very cinematic and then inspiring the players to try even more outragous and daring stunts.

The moment that one or more of the players comes to a realisation about a long running story arc and seeing them put the pieces together.

I once had a villain in my Epic game who was a White Slaad armed with heavy picks named Impaler...

...Slaad the Impaler...

It could have been worse, you could have had a villain who was an Emperor Slaad

... Caesar Slaad....

Perhaps we should start a separate thread for the worst gaming puns that you have come across. My players could fill several pages without much help :heh:

I'm about to throw a couple of magic items in the game that provide a really good luck bonus to saves and to-hit...

...The Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Fortune...

The climactic adventure of my Star Hero campaign ... after making their way as traders/privateers for five years, gradually getting more and more involved in galactic politics against their wills, trying to stay OUT of the war between the Terran Republic and the Thalar Empire, they found themselves in the biggest battle of the war.

The Thalar put a big honkin' nuclear bomb in the bottom of a conquered base on the moon, calculated to destabilize the lunar orbit -- giving the Earth a devastating but complete end over the course of several hours. With the entire Republic and Thalar fleets in pitched battle around them, the PC's infiltrated the base, fought their way past the Thalar still there, and finally got to the bomb.

Me: "You've managed to hack into the Thalar detonator's computer. There's a timer and an initial charge, but not much else. You don't have anything close to the demolitions skill necessary to defuse it. What do you want to do? It's currently at 20 seconds ... 19 ... 18..."

Player: "I reprogram the timer to start counting up. *3d6* I make my computer programming roll by 6."

Me: "19 ... 20 ... 21 ... 22..."

Players: *all break into cheers and high-fives, having saved the world*

That was a great gaming day. :)

I hope they remembered to have it properly deactivated some time later. Otherwise... three words: integer wrap around. Now that's what I call a millennium bug...

Okay, enough with the negativity. There must be reasons why you play this stinking game. Right? RIGHT?

So, what do you enjoy about the game? What are the moments you live for?

Any more?

I joined a new group recently. I have made some of the best friends I've ever had with people that I truly enjoy and respect. This is what I enjoy about the game. It is, in its way, a celebration of Life.

A house of glass
Broken by a Stone
The Sands of time
Running through our bones

Yet, we play on
Ever seek the Profound
To renew our lives
In imaginations fertile ground.

Rollplay and Roleplay
We fight Dragon and Drow
To emulate Achille's Glory
Til our sword's become a Plow

I have a special fondness for the moments when one of my players get's that "Eureka!" look on his/her face & proceeds to feverishly spew forth their epiphany on how they figured out who the murderer is, or how to destroy the artifact etc....but their grand solution is so far from removed from the "real" solution that I don't even know where they came up with.

Of course their idea really is brilliant (if wrong)....so I shift gears and go along with it. :)

What do I live for in D&D? Really?

* Introducing a new player to the game, and then they decide they want to keep playing.

* Seeing a player I introduced to the game take up DMing.

Those are the two best things. And both have happened to me quite a few times. :)

Cheers!
