Mongoose gets Babylon 5 license

On the other hand Lyta is the perfect example of what can happen when telepaths aren't regulated.

man, if I had to choose between the Psi Corps and a world the way Lyta and Byron did things... no contest, those two were the posterchildren for why the corps needed to be 'mended not ended' ;)

This is why Bester is evil, I really wish we got to see a final confrantion with Bester and Garibaldi in the show, instead of reading it in the psi corp triolgy.

Which was the episode where garibaldi needs some info in a hurry from some 'lowlife' and he basically just sits there hitting him with grazing shots from his blaster and threatening to kill him if he doesn't talk? I liked 'baldi too, he was a great character, but no one on the show was an angel, and the 'good guys' did things that put bester to shame...

My dream was that 'baldi would find a psicop willing to help him get his revenge if he would return the favor - turns out one of those teepsicles whose lives sheridan threw away to avoid killing the earthforce crews was a friend. They backed off of the moral ambiguity theme way too much 5th season. (at least that part that I watched)

Season 5 was the weakest, IMO. JMS was not sure if there was going to be a fifth season, so he had to wrap up the major story lines in season 4, Add to the fact the Clauida Christian was not in season 5..........

Bester is the quintessential Gothic anti-hero. He's Victor Frankenstein, a man who's blind to the harm he's doing because he believes the end justifies the means. Bester doesn't think he's evil, he thinks that telepaths everywhere are being oppressed (which they are), and sees himself as their savior. If some mundanes have to die, so he can protect his fellows, then... *shrug*

He'd make a great Darklord in Ravenloft. :D

Yes, Season 5 was weak because of production problems. TNT held off on their renewal decision until literally the last minute. So, while waiting to hear back, JMS squashed part of his storyline to fit into Season 4, so there could be some semblance of completion. The battle for Earth was supposed to be in the first 1/3 of S5, originally, and leave more time to bring the teeps to B5 in a logical manner.

And then Claudia Christian bailed. Well, to be fair, there were mistakes made on both sides (based on postings to the newsgroup). Claudia's agent was trying to hold out for more money, which wasn't forthcoming. And then, the contract just expired. JMS found out after it was too late, and CC wouldn't sign back on once she was out (though it's unclear whether that was because of money or just the principle that she felt ignored). So, more rewrites.

All things said and done, JMS did a tremendous job with all the difficulties thrown his way.

As for plots, there's plenty of things to do with B5!

  • Babylon 5 - Duh. Play as the lead cast, or put your own characters into the adventure. Be one of the Starfuries squadrons! Work security under Garibaldi! Be a maintenance crew! Sign up for Earthforce now! 8)
  • Psi Corps - As a regular teep or a Psi Cop, you represent telepaths everywhere. Deal with prejudice, crime, terrorism and aliens trying to subvert your government... and secrets within the corps itself.
  • Rangers - Fight the good fight. Train under the best Minbari martial artists, and struggle against the darkness. Whether you're carrying messages to those in the know, or crewing a White Star for the Alliance, you can make a difference to the galaxy.
  • Earthforce - Similar to the B5 campaign, work on an Earthforce cruiser or base. Defend yourself against Raiders, aliens, and decide which side to fight on during the Earth Civil War. Then clean up the mess, and prepare for the Telepath War. Then clean up the mess and prepare for the Drakh plague.
  • Interstellar Expeditions - Archeaologists for the modern day. Explore dead worlds, and alien landscapes. Discover secrets long lost, and things that should remain lost. Then, bring them home for R&D to turn into useful products for Earth!
  • Colonies - Struggle on the rim as you build a colony for Earth. Or, try to survive the mean streets of older, established colonies. Whether you're a trader, explorer, Blip or alien, there's someone willing to pay for your services.
  • Raiders - Yeah, you get the crappy ships. You get shot at. You get in barfights. You wouldn't trade it for anything else when the cargo hold is full of stolen Quantium-30, worth millions.
  • Alien races - Who says humans have all the fun? Be a Centauri pilot, fighting for glory against the barbarian Narn! Be a Narn soldier, defending your home from the ruthless Centauri! Be a Minbari warrior, aching for battle that has been denied for years! Be any creature you can imagine... there are wonders no one has seen yet.

"I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe and that we have not yet explained everything." - G'kar, Babylon 5

Lyta Alexander

What happened to Lyta?

Well...

In one of the last episodes of season 5, Lyta and Garibaldi are making a deal; Lyta will remove Bester's "Asimov" programming from Garibaldi, if Garibaldi will help Lyta with her Telepath Resistance Movement.

In that little scene, talking about what the Vorlons did to her, she says. "... And then, you [the Vorlons] have one or two really big weapons. Like nukes. Just in case you ever need them." Then she turns around, light literally appearing in her eyes, and says, "Hello."

She wasn't kidding about being a sort of "living nuke," as we found out in Crusade...

Lyta Spoilers

I only know about her fate from the Psicorp books. As powerful and invulnerable as she thought she was, I have impression it wasn't enough. Bester outlived her, and the Psicorp didn't change all that much, given their actions in Crusades. I suppose Psicorp are seen as making great villains, the Psicorp inquisitor had to be blackmailed in Crusades.

It its also never explained in Crusade why the teep XO is not wearing gloves, so something happened, and i bet Lyta had alot to do with it. I don't think the Psi corps is evil, but Bester definatly is. Garabaldi is one of my favorite characters from the series.
From what I've read on the web, there was apparently some kind of "Telepath war" (I think was alluded to in the season 4 ender, where the future people said something like "and Sheridan's decision to allow the rogue telepaths onboard later led to the telepath war.") that resulted in the Psicorps being abolished and teeps being allowed to live "regular" lives, though they had to submit to scans every now and then to make sure they weren't making unauthorized scans. The teep on Crusade was supposedly one of the first teeps in Earthforce, and felt that he had to be a good role model and stuff like that.

From Crusades, PsiCorp is gone in name at least. Special telepaths like Mr. Jones seem to serve the same roll as psicops, with the same legal powers, and much the same techniques. Teeps are not allowed regular lives, but there is not the same degree of separation as previously. they don't have to wear anything that says 'I'm a telepath' anymore. Telepaths are still strictly policed, though.

Right. Soon after Bablyon 5 ends, telepaths everywhere begin to polarize. There's those who side with the PsiCorps, and those who side with Lyta and her rebellious group (inspired by Byron). Eventually, it turns into full-out fighting, with the mundanes (normal humans) in the middle.

Eventually, things come to a head when the leader of the rebels is captured. She is taken to a secret base to be interrogated... but it was a trap. She let herself be captured in order to detonate the bomb implanted in her body. Rebel telepaths were waiting, having tracked her location, and used the chaos to invade and destroy the PsiCorps main facility.

Bester wasn't there at the time.

(JMS later revealed that the part of the rebel leader was supposed to be Lyta, but Pat Tallman was unavailable for filming when they shot that episode of Crusade.)

After it was over, the Alliance stepped in and Earth had to make some changes. The Corps was disbanded, and teeps were given more rights. However, they still couldn't go unpoliced. Now, any teep can be in the military or other government job. However, any telepath involved in such employment must undergo routine scans by another designated telepath periodically, to make sure they aren't breaking the rules regarding unapproved scans.

In a way, it's the Corps all over again.
