Mongoose & Runequest

To each his own, pal.
The previously unidentified "middle ground" fans such as yourself seem to like Conan OGL but are open to a RQ version of Conan as well. Happy now?

If the RQ fans were taking your approach or saying why they think RQ were a better fit without tearing down the Conan RPG there would be less vitriol on both sides. Coming from the "Conan Diehard" camp I must say that listening to subjective D20-bashing in the forum dedicated to the Conan OGL RPG gets old after a while.

I understand where you are coming from, and your second post clarifies your stance....Your first post read as quite black and white, which is why I responded as I did.

I think D20 Conan is the best product to come out using the D20 System (to be precise, we all know it's OGL, but it still uses the base D20 system), and while I am also a fan of D&D, I really enjoy the old "BRP" (Basic Roleplaying) system that Runequest uses....Unfortunately, there were things about the BRP system that needed an update.

From all appearances, the Mongoose Runequest system is going to fix all of my perceived issues with the old system, and I do think it will be a great fit for the Conan setting, but I'll wait and see if it's better than D20 Conan once I have played it. If it's not, I'll be sticking with D20 Conan.

The knee-jerk reactions of folks over on the Mongoose forums who cry "Boycott Mongoose" or "All the books I have bought for D20 Conan are wasted" (based on the rumor and pure speculation of what the future holds for the D20 Conan line and any possible version of Runequest Conan) are a bit ridiculous.

While I understand the sentiment of feeling slighted if D20 Conan is dropped in favor of a new system, or altered in someway (duel-statted for both systems) I think Mongoose is probably smart enough (based on past actions) not to alienate the current fan base, and everyone should just take a few deep breaths and wait and see what the company says before freaking out.

Then again, this is the interweb, and we are talking about the RPG community....so I should probably expect a bit of high-emotion, generalization, and a rapid jump to conclusion without all of the facts in hand.

Time to dump my Conan stuff, I guess.
Also why? I buy it and wouldn't use either d20 or RQ for the Hyborian Age.

Most folks who see the character sheet think it's terrible, but a couple of forum posters on the Mongoose Forums have already created their own sheets which are much better.
On the other hand, to my recollection every official character sheet is greeted by a bunch of people saying how bad it is.

This does not get repeated enough ;)

Personally I very much love the d20 Conan stuff so far.

I am interested in Runequest, for two reasons I guess... I use to love it back in the mid-80's when last I played it, and while I have NEVER been a fan of % run under (or over for that matter) systems, playing Warhammer Fantasy 2nd ed recently had shown me that I can get past this VERY easily... so I will pick up the Runequest rules and read them over :D

You know, possibly the most interesting thing about the new RQ hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. Mongoose is publishing RQ as an Open Licence game. The RQ SRD will be available for download once the main book releases.

Apparently they already have several third-party publishers lined up to do RQ products under their open licence. If the product line is a success who knows, it just might mean that open gamming will become a staple of the industry for decades! :uhoh:

So for that if for nothing else, I will be keeping an eye on the RQ line.

As a big fan of Glorantha, and merely tolerant of the old Runequest system, I'll be looking forward to the Glorantha supplements, but I could care less about the system stuff.

Well, I once played RQ3 and will never go back from d20 to a d100 engine.

If Mongoose scraps the Conan OGL game - one of the best and most beautiful games on the market - they have one customer less.

I remember seeing a thread someplace wher Matt said that Mongoose would be putting out a lot stuff for Conan with the RQ rules. I could have been dilusional @ the time, but I don't think so.

My only problem @ this point with the new RQ is that to get the core rules + Glorantha its going to cost $60 and it will only be 280 pgs of material.

I also signed up for a demo of MRQ at GenCon.

My initial reaction to Mongoose getting the license was bittersweet; I love RQ, but I'm honestly not a big Mongoose fan. Then I got in on the initial playtest, which went down in flames, as did my confidence in the product.

It also seems like Steve Perrin (who wasn't even asked to participate in development until he asked if he could be in the playtest) hasn't been allowed to contribute much, though since the Mongoose site doesn't list any authors, that I can tell, I'm not 100% sure of this. At least, Mr. Sprange is the only author credited in any of the book entries on Amazon. I'd be happy to be proven wrong here.

Basically, I don't have high expectations, but I'm trying to reserve judgement until I get a chance to play it and see the product.

All skill base chances looked to be based on the characters Ability Scores instead of most of them being a fixed number in the original RQ.
Doesn't this make scores less relevant than before? IIRC, your scores provided % bonuses to the base values in RQ2 and RQ3, anywhere from 5% to 25%. In MRQ, e.g., starting Basic Ranged skill = DEX. So, starting out, the difference in ability between a DEX 10 PC and a DEX 18 PC is... 8%?
