Mongoose Publishing is pleased to announce a brand new d20 System RPG game line;

WarMech - Armageddon 2089

This is a brand new spin on the Mecha genre, set on an Earth of the near future. The technology is based and expanded upon today’s military technology, with gigantic humanoid fighting machines dominating battlefields. WarMech’s central conflict is a World War with a difference – the main antagonists are the European Federation and the USA, with the rest of the world either taking sides or desperately trying to remain neutral. ‘Star Wars’ satellites rule the skies, shooting down long-range missiles while a desperate sea and air battle rages across the Atlantic. . . Somewhere near you, a small enemy Mech squad just walked out of the ocean from a vast submersible transport. Operating behind enemy lines, using guerrilla warfare tactics but state-of-the-art fighting machines, the Mech squads are both sides’ main method of bringing Armageddon to their enemy’s home countries. An isolationist and paranoid USA wars against a greedy and authoritarian Europe, meaning there are no good guys here – just ordinary (and extraordinary) people struggling to survive in a world gone mad. This is Total War. This is WarMech.

The WarMech - Armageddon 2089 roleplaying game will be available in March 2003 and, like other Mongoose Publishing games, will be heavily supported with sourcebooks and adventures.

Right, that is the official part out of the way! If you have read this far, you may have a few questions about this all new game. . .

What sort of support are you planning for WarMech - Armageddon 2089?

If you are familiar with our Judge Dredd and Slaine roleplaying games, you will know how serious we are about supporting them, and no fan of WarMech will have to wait long for new material after the release of the main rulebook. Inevitably a game of this nature is going to feature many Mech designs, and so we will release the Mech Arms and Armour Catalogue simultaneously with the main rulebook. New equipment and technology are always good to grant further options when designing Mechs, though we are keen to avoid the ‘technology escalation’ problems some of our favourite games in the past have had, where each new supplement makes all the old designs obsolete! We have a couple of campaigns in mind, one for a European Federation Mech squad and the other for US Mech Officers, but both campaigns will offer the option of adaptation for a Mech squad on either side. We also plan to offer several sourcebooks expanding the non-Mech aspects of the game – giving you more options for your infantry or tank battalion campaign, for example.

In addition, we are also preparing a range of novels to support WarMech, currently being written by a few authors one or two of you may well recognise. . .

Why is the game set on Earth? What, no drop-ships, no travelling to new planets to blow them up?

Two of the things we established early on were that we wanted a near-future setting to take advantage of gamers’ knowledge of modern day politics, but we also wished the technology to be as plausible as possible. We figured you would be willing to suspend your disbelief about the technology behind the Mechs themselves, since gigantic humanoid fighting machines are inherently a lot cooler than mere tanks, but for the rest of it we wanted reasonably accurate technology.

What is all this about realistic technology?

This is as close as we can get to a ‘hard’ science fiction setting while still including Mechs. We have done extensive research into current and near-future military weaponry and related technologies so as to keep things as plausible as possible, but always with an eye toward keeping the game playable and, most importantly, fun. For example, it turns out that one of the features of particle accelerators is that, used in atmosphere, their energy tends to disperse in a very short distance and in a highly devastating manner. So in WarMech, particle accelerators are not long-range precision killers – they are a lot more like a highly radioactive and explosive shotgun! Tokamak fusion plants power many Mechs, but breech the magnetic shell of the power plant and you are in trouble – just hope your pilot was in the Mech’s head rather than the torso. You might just have chance to eject before your once-proud Mech turns into a molten puddle. . .

What will the rulebook be like?

256 pages in length, hardcover, and full colour throughout. We have some very talented CGI artists working on the most incredible Mech designs you have seen this side of your imagination, plus detailed rules for Mechs, Mech design, artillery, electronic warfare, unmanned drones, rockets, railguns and much more. Every option imaginable for Mechs has been crammed into this rulebook. For the rest, well, you will just have to wait for the previews, coming soon. . .

Do we have to play Mech pilots?

Not at all. While the five Mech Officer character classes are great for most campaigns, if the setting really appeals to you but prefer things up-close and personal, you could try an infantry campaign – though in a world where 200 ton Mechs armed with electrothermal cannon and kinetic energy missiles are not uncommon, life as a grunt is tougher than ever! Alternatively you could play a tank crew, the less glamorous distant cousins of the elite Mech pilots, trapped behind enemy lines and running out of fuel! Or an ordinary citizen, drawn into conflict or intrigue more or less against your will, desperately fighting for survival in the tough world of 2089. . .

Wow, this sounds pretty cool. The d20 Mecha game in Dungeon was good, but this is taking things up a whole new level.

I'm curious as to how you envision adventuring in this campaign setting. From what you describe, it sounds more like a mission-based wargame rather than a roleplaying-oriented setting. Can you enlighten us? Cool nonetheless. Thanks.

Is it the press release for d20 Mecha by GoO and d20 Mecha compendium by DP9 that spawned this new press release?:p

More seriously, on the rule side, do you plan to use the same set of rule that GoO produce or to create a third set?

As an avid Mecha gamer (Mekton all versions, Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, even Battletech - cool setting crappy graphic designs) your announcement is a welcome addition to Mecha Crusade, GOO's D20 Mecha and DP9's Mecha Compendium. I'm looking forward to purchasing each product. However I have quite a few questions and comments.

In your post you stated that you'll be using as much real-world physics as possible so I'll assume that most advanced KEW's (Kinetic Energy Weapons and DEW's (Directed Energy Weapons)under research/ testing will be available. So I'll ask now which weapons systems will we see:

HPM's (High Powered Microwave)?
Lasers?
Particle Beams (Charged or Neutral, also don't forget that firing a laser ahead of the PB can improve the range and performance of the Particle Beam)?
Plasma?
Rail/ Coil Guns
Electrothermal/ Electrothermal-Chemical?

Also how easy will it be use the rules? Will they only require minimum familiarization if you're already familiar with D&D/ D20 Modern? Or do intend major rule additions? Do you envision WarMech as an add-on for D20 Modern or D&D? Will regular guns be deadly to characters (vice Mecha Crusade, where they're intended to make you get in your mech)? Will you apply realistic damage/ ranges for Mech weapons (vice Battletech)?

How much will non-mech roleplaying figure into the game (i.e. sneak into an enemy base and blow up the ammo dump type mission or SOF type adventures)?

What will be the place of Power Armor in the game? Will you relegate non-Mech units to a secondary role (ala Battletech (where the 'Mech was King of the Battlefield) or will it a more balance game with a Combined Arms concept (closer to Heavy Gear where tanks, infantry, Gears, Striders, Air Support and Artillery all have an important role on the battlefield)?

Also I hope your mecha designs have a decidedly anthropomorphic design instead of the "human with guns for arms" design preferred by some systems

Great idea!

Wow, Europe and US at war: a French dream comes true! I'm really curious to know if the UK is part of Europe or America or 'desperately neutral' - ehehehehe...

Jokes apart, this is a really enticing idea and nothing I suppose stop us (me?) from making little changes, for example the Paranoid USA versus Good Europe or viceversa. Perhaps I'll have to learn 3e rules after all...

PS: Matt, I gave up on the Judge Dredd RPG review (I have put the book for sale in the store) but I did complete the review for the Slayer's Guides to Female Gamers and Rules Layers. I hope that KaosOnLine will post it very soon (as soon as the Editor will be back from Afghanistan and this is not a joke)

A lot of questions! I'll see if I can answer them here, though Ian Sturrock is still putting the finishing touches to the final draft of the rules, so please forgive me if I am less than 100% on anything - I'll get him to post a preview on here soon.

--->I'm curious as to how you envision adventuring in this campaign setting. From what you describe, it sounds more like a mission-based wargame rather than a roleplaying-oriented setting. Can you enlighten us?

From the rulebook, you can play this game as a wargame with miniatures, or a hard sci-fi RPG. I'll get Ian to do a preview on the RPG side of things, but basically, there will be lots of times when your Mech Officers have to think rather than fight, and the politics in the world of 2089 are somewhat convoluted, to say the least, giving the players plenty of opportunity to get their hands 'dirty' without actually fighting.

--->Is it the press release for d20 Mecha by GoO and d20 Mecha compendium by DP9 that spawned this new press release?

No - it is actually incredibly difficult for a company to do this, especially for an entire RPG line.

--->More seriously, on the rule side, do you plan to use the same set of rule that GoO produce or to create a third set?

Both Mongoose and GoO are looking at their respective rules systems, and we are hoping to ensure a good measure of compatibility across the board. Naturally, there will be large differences, as while both games are Mech based, what each game tries to do is wildly different.

--->HPM's (High Powered Microwave)?

That one I'll have to double check.

--->Lasers?
Particle Beams (Charged or Neutral, also don't forget that firing a laser ahead of the PB can improve the range and performance of the Particle Beam)?
Plasma?
Rail/ Coil Guns
Electrothermal/ Electrothermal-Chemical?

Yes to the above.

--->Also how easy will it be use the rules? Will they only require minimum familiarization if you're already familiar with D&D/ D20 Modern? Or do intend major rule additions? Do you envision

Major. As far as the Mongoose is concerned, the D20 rules are there to be bent and twisted to fit a genre, not the other way round. However, knowing the D20 System will allow you to breeze through the Mech Officer character generation chapter, and Mech Combat is recognisably D20. However, it also breaks a lot of new ground, as mechs need hit locations, etc. . .

--->WarMech as an add-on for D20 Modern or D&D?

Well, neither really :) Basically it will be a complete game, but it will use standard D20 as a base rather than D20 Modern (far more flexible when you are doing this kind of game design).

--->Will regular guns be deadly to characters (vice Mecha Crusade, where they're intended to make you get in your mech)?

For a while, they were instant death. At this time (and subject to the ongoing playtesting) they are very nasty, but need not kill a character. Well, not all the time :)

--->Will you apply realistic damage/ ranges for Mech weapons (vice Battletech)?

Oh, yes :)

--->How much will non-mech roleplaying figure into the game (i.e. sneak into an enemy base and blow up the ammo dump type mission or SOF type adventures)?

We have ensured that if players want to just jump into a Mech and blow stuff up, they can. However, we have also included enough background information (which the coming novels will follow) that players and GMs wanting to get into the political side of things have all the data they need. It is being sold as a Mech game, but there is a complete setting built in of which we will be examining different parts in later releases.

--->What will be the place of Power Armor in the game? Will you

At this time, Mechs go down to 10 tons in size, which kind of fulfils the area for Power Armour. Power Armour as you know it is coming, but it is waiting for one main technological breakthrough first. . .

--->relegate non-Mech units to a secondary role (ala Battletech (where the 'Mech was King of the Battlefield) or will it a more balance game with a Combined Arms concept (closer to Heavy Gear where tanks, infantry, Gears, Striders, Air Support and Artillery all have an important role on the battlefield)?

The Mech is king, but you need combined arms if you are going to win the whole battle. It would certainly be viable for the players to run a Tank Mercenary Company, for example, rather than a Corporate Mech Squadron.

--->Also I hope your mecha designs have a decidedly anthropomorphic design instead of the "human with guns for arms" design preferred by some systems

I think you'll like them :)

--->Wow, Europe and US at war: a French dream comes true! I'm really curious to know if the UK is part of Europe or America or 'desperately neutral' - ehehehehe...

The UK is a shattered land still clinging on after it fought a War of Independence (aided by the US) against a Federated Europe.

--->Jokes apart, this is a really enticing idea and nothing I suppose stop us (me?) from making little changes, for example the Paranoid USA versus Good Europe or viceversa. Perhaps I'll have to learn 3e rules after all...

Part of the attraction of the game being set in 2089 is certainly that you can see today's world mirrored in it. . .

Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, just give me a holler, otherwise I'll be seeing what I can do about the preview. . .

You forgot to quote the :p

By the way you should seriously consider doing your press release at the end of the month, one week earlier than usual. Because I think that you've never been able to announce a book on a subject before other did it (on the same subject), when several company were doing the same thing.

So I suppose that GoO produce a design system for any mecha style (perhaps able to even design bicycle like their and DP9 current system can do).

That you're system has built in limitation to represent the level of technologie (Military Budgeter "no more than 8000 laser in the right arm of a 1 tons humanoid mecha please";))

But that the end result of both design system will be able to fight each other without rule conversion, or with rules conversion that can be done on the fly, right?

--->Wow, Europe and US at war: a French dream comes true! I'm really curious to know if the UK is part of Europe or America or 'desperately neutral' - ehehehehe...

The UK is a shattered land still clinging on after it fought a War of Independence (aided by the US) against a Federated Europe.

That's complelty unrealistic! No one in the E.U. would try to keep the UK inside Europe if it wanted to leave :D

Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, just give me a holler, otherwise I'll be seeing what I can do about the preview. . .

Thanks!
