(Mongoose) Wraith Recon Announced for 4e

Definitely says "Wrath Recon" on the cover art, but it's "Wraith Recon" everywhere else (including Matt's post). I hope that hasn't been locked down and sent off to the printers just yet!

Honestly? Provided this is straight up only-need-the-core-books fantasy I'm there. If it's some kind of hybrid maybe not so much. But I trust Mongoose.

Wraith Recon

Interesting setting. I imagine this could also be used as a supplement by the DM's who use the Eberron setting. Or vice versa.

IMHO it looks like a rather limited setting. I mean, how many different blackops stories can you game before it starts to get repetitive? I would much rather prefer if the players were not all expected to be blackops operatives.

Anyway it is the first setting for 4e I´ve heard about that tries to blend hi-tech weaponry with 4e system. That alone is interesting, let's see how well it fits.

(I know it speaks about "magic weapons" but it all screams "hi tech" to me).

This was the defined brief right at the start of Wraith Recon - core rulebooks only, add virtually nothing, in terms of classes and characters and even, to an extent, equipment and magic items.

It will have everything you are used to, and can use new additions to the game as you see fit later on. Nothing but core books needed.

We are just using them in a very different way :)

Well, "Starship Troopers," especially the novel, is ultimately more about the society the troopers come from than it is the combat stuff. I would imagine most Wraith Recon campaigns would eventually feature the players turning around and saying "Wait a second: We're the elite soldiers of the most powerful empire in the world, and we're kicking the crap out of guys throwing rocks and sticks at us. What the heck is going on back home?"

I think the basic level of the game is just the first layer of an onion that needs peeling, myself.
 

When I first started reading it I was "ho hum." Then when I was finished I was, "I have been wanting a setting like this for years!"

Simply because I have the same elements in my campaign, just lower key and not so strongly defined.

I just hope it isn't heavy on rules. Meaning I hope the rules mechanics are not what defines the flavor of the setting. They should help, but not be the defining elements.

No, I am not going 4E. Fortunately my system being C&C allows me not to care. If I like the product I can buy it and use it. No matter the edition. I like that freedom.

It's pretty much the whole premise of Spycraft and that's a succesful product line with plenty of adventures.
