Monk Revisions

And even later, rogues and spellcasters usually failed more than 50%.

Thats true; there are certain people that the Monk is good at beating up on, and people with low AC and low Fort are those people. See me smash Kobolds left and right. I am a Monk. ;-)

Unfortunately, at lower levels, spellcasters arent as deadly a foe as they are at high levels. The Monk has a hard time carving out a role for himself as a 'spellcaster seeking missile' until the other PCs start to really fear spellcasters at the mid-to-high levels.

These things are more like patches than solutions, as it fixes the problem, at a cost, but not really fixing the Monk

Yep, I certainly am hoping that 3.5E recognizes that the Monk is very sucky at low levels and (according to many) too strong at high levels. I suspect thats exactly what we will see, as the Monk has already been identified as one of the four classes to be tuned in 3.5E.

Tangent: This thread is barely over 100 posts. A good "Monk Sucks v. Monk Rules!" thread will easily go to 500. You guys arent trying hard enough. ;-)

I would like to see the monks get reworked sort of like the rogue

As a rogue gets 'Special Abilities'......

Monks should get 'Special Techniques' that allow many of the monk abilities to be chosen from a list instead of set out the same way for everyone.....

In OA, monks are allowed to pick thier own feats, instead of....

always getting 'stunning attack' at level 1
always getting the 'Deflect Arrows' feat at level 2
and always getting the 'Improved Trip' feat at level 6

OA monks also get Knowledge (religion) as a class skill
as well as more cool weapons

There's a feat in Kingdoms of Kalamar that might help. (These things are more like patches than solutions, as it fixes the problem, at a cost, but not really fixing the Monk.) It's called Unerring Strike, and is basically the reverse of Power Attack. You subtract a number from your damage and add it to your attack roll. It's limited by your BAB, just like Power Attack, and has a Dex requirement of 13+. Minimum damage is 1, no matter how much you subtract, but that shouldn't affect the Stunning attack.

Your DM might say it's too powerful a feat, though. It's great for Rogues.

!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was written for harm, death touch, and other touch attacks.

Absolutely! It would allow for greater variety in the class, allowing PCs and DMs alike to come up with different monastic orders with different abilities. The trick is you still need to make the abilities worthwhile. For example, I don't see many people taking Deflect Arrows or Purity of Body if they don't have too. Some really compelling abilities would have to be included.
