Monk Variant- Martial Artist

Well, the thing is, it doesn't have to be too involved. Just abstract the class a little bit, like the rest of the game is abstracted.

After all, despite their amazing variety, there are going to be certain shared techniqes...or at least techniques that have similar results.

So, lets say that most of the class' levels just provide typical benefits- improvements to BAB & saves, etc., but every 4 levels (or 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 15th & 20th, or whatever structure you choose), the player would have 5 abilities to choose from. If you so designed it, a PC could choose an ability from any level list equal to or lower than the PC's current special level.

To make things even more interesting, some of the abilities might have alignment prerequisites, or prerequisites of other class abilities (like feats do). For instance, if you had a class ability that allowed the PC to ignore a certain amount of damage from an energy type, they might have to have the lower level ability that grants DR.

The only thing that has to really get detailed is the list of "Martial Artist Weapons" that a PC can use with abilities like Flurry of Blows (or its equivalent). Some will have limitied lists, like Escrima. Others, like Shaolin Kung Fu may be quite extensive. In an alternative to generating specific weapon lists for a variety of martial arts, you might try making a general list for the players to choose from, like:
Proficient in all simple weapons, PLUS Choose one of the following groups as the PC's Melee Martial Arts Weapons and additional Ranged weapons:

1) 1 One-handed and 2 Light Martial weapons + 1 Martial Ranged Weapon
2) 3 Exotic Light weapons + 1 Martial or Exotic Ranged Weapon
3) 1 Exotic Light Weapon + 1 Exotic One-handed weapon + 1 Martial Ranged Weapon
4) 1 Martial or Exotic 2 handed weapon + 1 Martial or Exotic Ranged Weapon
5) Any 5 Simple weapons +1 Martial or Exotic Ranged weapon

These Melee Martial arts weapons may be used with Flurry of Blows

With a list like that, you should be able to simulate most martial arts weapons selections.

If not, you could even allow the class to add one of the weapon groups as a level-dependent benefit (IOW, one of the 4+ cafeteria line of choices at the special levels).

I like this class, i does not found it too strong, remember it's a body fighter rather than a weapon fighter, it means, it's strong for a campaign fighting inside a city, but very bad for fighting a creature with natural defenses. Try to use it against a flying dragon, you must cover, the fighter at least can use her arrows... And against a true monk, maybe it's more powerful in melee combat, but a barbarian orc too... and i think an old monk does not fight in melee combat to such material focused mortal beings... he he

I'm also considering giving it the monk/paladin restriction against multiclassing again.
Nah. Marital artists are able to do ordinary things while continuing their fighting/defensive/meditating practices.

Don't know if this is breaking forums rules, but I'd like to give an example. Say you practiced marital arts as a kid and teenager, then stop for, lets say, fifteen or twenty years. Why can't you take it up again?

Well, that is a question of realism vs game balance. Restrictions are made for flavor and game balance, and should be very intentional by design.

There's no need for such restriction... This character has not the mysticism of the monk or the devotion of the paladin...

About other things, have you seen the martial arts system of Ken Hood? It's placed in another topic in this subforum, but i don't remember where.... Sleeping Imperium was the game played with it, i think it also has a thread here.

And somebody else made a Martial Artist class based on those rules.

I can't upload them here, let me try to upload them to other place.

Yep, uploaded them.

They talk about an alternative Grim-n-Gritty rules, but i didn't upload them yet. But, don't worry, you don't need Grim-n-Gritty Hit Point rules to use Martial Arts System.
